Model: Archer BE550
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.2

Hi,

Is anyone here using the WireGuard VPN Server feature of their Archer BE550 V1?
If yes, what download/upload speeds are you getting through the VPN?

Somehow the speed I am getting via the BE550 V1's WireGuard Server is lower than via the same router's OpenVPN server, which is very weird, because on other Archer routers WireGuard provides much better speeds than OpenVPN. In fact, at around 60 Mbps it is even slower than some cheap router models that also support WireGuard, like the Archer AX55 and AX53.
I already reset the BE550 to factory default settings and then setup the WireGuard VPN Server again, but it made no difference.

Well, I use it occasionally on my BE550 v1 with latest 1.1.2 firmware installed. The router is on a 1000/300 Mbps link and have both WireGuard and OpenVPN servers active.

I tested them from second location on different country and the results seem a bit strange. I do direct connection from this location via BE800 as a client. My link here is 1000/100Mbps and below my results (by SpeedTest):

WireGuard - 280/85 Mbps

OpenVPN - 33/77 Mbps

So as you can see WireGuard utilising almost my whole available connection. I know that OpenVPN is a bit slower but I am surprised that is almost 10 times slower, however only in download direction, upload speed is similar to WireGuard protocol. Both WireGuard and OpenVPN servers on BE550 have default configuration because to be honest I don't need nothing more.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your detailed reply!

It seems the device I ran the WireGuard client on must have been misbehaving. Now I tested with another device and I am also able to max out the 250 Mbps bandwidth limit of my Internet connection.

It's indeed odd that the performance of OpenVPN is so much lower than that of WireGuard.
