Hi

If anyone could kindly provide advice (new user, just purchased a Deco X50 / AX3000 to, hopefull, improve WiFi signal strength throughout my home) regarding the best set-up to use for the following it would be greatly appreciated:

Current hardware:

Sky Hub (SR203)

TP-Link extender (AC750 / RE220)

Various TP-Link and KASA smart plugs (mainly P110) and a camera (C200)*

Various other makes of smart devices*

*The vast majority of these devices (if not all) require setting up / connecting via a 2.4GHz WiFi band

Has anyone had any experience setting up a Deco mesh system to work with 2.4GHz devices please? (N.B. I also have some other devices that can use the 5GHz band e.g. my mobile. I don't currently have any WiFi 6 devices, although this could obviously change in the future).

For example:

1. What is the the best Deco 'mode' to use? (I believe there is a wireless router mode and an access point mode)

2. Can I set-up the Deco to use my current SSID / network name (& password) to save having to change these on all the smart devices?

3. Would I need to turn off (if this is possible) the WiFi bands in my Sky hub (to prevent any possible interference with the Deco mesh system)?

4. I've heard that a possible alternative (for setting up 2.4GHz smart devices) is to use a Deco IoT setting? Is this correct please? If so, is this another option (or the only one) and how would I set this up please?

As far as I know (having only just purchased a two unit Deco X50 pack), I need to download the Deco app; connect one of the Deco units, using an ethernet cable, to my Sky hub; and let that unit connect wirelessly to the other Deco unit (placed elsewhere in my home so that I obtain the best coverage).

Any advice, information, ideas, or options if there are different ones that are possible (with advantages/disadvantages if applicable)

would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi, welcome to the community.

Have you already set up the Deco through the Deco APP?

If yes, can I have its current firmware version?

If not yet, can you help me find the hardware version printed on the bottom product label, such as V1.0/ or V1.2?

You can test with the following setup:

  • Keep Skyhub SR203 as the main DHCP router but disable its WiFi network.
  • Set up Deco in default wireless router mode and use the previous SSID of SR203; then, switch the operation mode to "Access Point" mode after setup.

(*As Deco doesn't allow settings separate SSIDs for 2.4+5GHz, it is suggested to use the 5GHz SSID of SR203)

  • Enable the IOT network with the previous 2.4GHz SSID of SR203.

For the RE220, if you find that Deco can already cover the whole house, there is no need to configure the RE220.

But if the Deco wifi range is not enough, you can set up RE220 to extend the main network(2.4+5GHz) of the Deco X50.

Thank you very much and best regards.

Hi David, Many thanks for your reply and information. I've tried to reply/ask some questions but I keep on getting an error message (when I press the 'Post' button) saying "Content or title contains illegal external links". I can't see any links (other than perhaps your @name tag. Please advise. I've downloaded the app in readiness but the units are still boxed. It says Ver:1.0 on the model, serial and password label. What is the difference between v1.0 and v1.2 please? Have I been sold an old version? Many thanks

  @MikeW34

Hi, Thanks for the update.

I think there might be an unknown network glitch or misrecognition.

It is mainly related to the firmware release cycle. Actually, for Deco X50, V1 has a faster pace of firmware release than V1.2.

For more details, you can refer to Understand the Differences Among Deco Firmware Platforms

Best regards.

Hi David

Thanks for your reply and link showing firmware updates. To clarify, are you saying that the Deco X50 v1.0 hardware is the same as the v1.2 please? (i.e. the only difference is the firmware which, presumably, would be updated to the latest version when I set-up the devices?)

I'll have another try to send my original reply shortly (via my PC, rather than my tablet/mobile, this time to see if that resolves the error message I mentioned).

Kind regards

Mike

@David-TP

Hi David

I've tried numerous things to try and send you my original message but keep on getting the same error message I mentioned.  Any ideas how to resolve / send my message please?

I sent a test reply (with just 'Test' written in it - since deleted) and that worked so I assume the problem isn't the title/subject as my other reply today also worked.  I've also pasted my message into a text editor / save as plain text (just in case of any 'hidden' characters, etc); tried putting the message in the main reply 'window' and also using the 'quick reply' options but these all give the same error message! :-(

Thanks

Just to let you know that I've tried completely retyping my original message (apart from the v1.0/v1.2 question that I put in subsequent messages) from scratch and STILL get the same error message :-(

Any ideas please?

Hi, their hardware is different. V1 and V1.2 are used to identify the different hardware versions. They are more like different chipset solutions in order to achieve similar network performance.

As for the error message, how about you send what you want to post here via private message so I can test on my side what caused the illegal link error?

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

Thanks for the message. Please refer to the following reply:

Quoted:

Many thanks for your reply and information David. Hopefully I'll try and set them up sometime over the next few days.
In answer to your questions: 1. I've downloaded the Deco app (in readiness) but I've not actually used it yet.
2. (v1.0/1.2 - answered already) With regard to your comments, please could you advise / clarify the following:
1. "Keep Skyhub SR203 as the main Deco
(it was a typo, sorry, I meant for "main router")but disable its WiFi network". I'll check the Sky hub settings (re turning of the WiFi), however, when you say keep it as the main Deco, do you mean connect the first Deco X50 to it (using a network cable) or something else please? I assumed that one of the two Decos had to be wired (using an ethernet cable) to the Sky hub, whilst the other Deco (placed elsewhere in my home) linked wirelessly to the other one (i.e. the one wired to the hub). Please confirm/clarify.
2. You said "...suggested to use the 5GHz SSID of SR203" but, prior to that, mentioned switching off the Sky hub WiFi. Please clarify.
3. How do I setup / enable the IoT network as you suggest?

-For the IoT Network features, you can refer to TP-Link IoT Network(https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/stories/detail/501928)
Many thanks again

Many thanks for your reply.

Please could you answer my question (2.) re the 5GHz SSID (previously you said switch off the WiFi)

Thanks

Re:Set-up of Deco X50 for 2.4GHz smart devices
Friday

  @MikeW34

Hi, Actually, I have explained it already:

(*As Deco doesn't allow settings separate SSIDs for 2.4+5GHz, it is suggested to use the 5GHz SSID of SR203)

On the Deco APP, there are three available networks for Deco X50:

  • Main WiFi network: 2.4+5GHz both are enabled.
  • Guest Network
  • IOT network: 2.4GHz is enabled by default.

All networks support 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, but use the same SSID for both bands. It isn't like SR203, which has different SSIDs for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

So the following configuration is intended to provide an individual 2.4GHz SSID for smart home devices, and allow the previous devices to switch to the Deco network without reconnecting each of them

Main WiFi network with SR203 5GHz SSID: 2.4+5GHz both are enabled, or you can disable 2.4GHz

IOT network with SR203 2.4GHz SSID:  only 2.4GHz is enabled.

Thank you very much and best regards.
