TD-W9980 crashing: TP-Link need to fix this issue ASAP!

Region : Ireland
Model : TD-W9980
Hardware Version : V1
Current Firmware Version : 0.6.0 1.8 v0021.0 Build 140925 Rel.32089n
Latest Firmware tested: TD-W9980_V1_141215
ISP : Eircom eFibre VDSL2 (no vectoring so far)
Recently bought a TD-W9980 and quickly began to notice these modem routers have a flaw that has been carried through several generations of TP-link devices. For some odd reason the router doesn't play nice with networked devices pushing high bandwidth up and down and around the WAN/LAN, so much so that it crashes randomly at least twice, maybe three times a day. You can't access the network wirelessly, any new devices attempting to connect will not be assigned an IP by DHCP as it seems to be borked, the modem's firmware settings are inaccessible but you can connect to the internet on a wired connection strangely enough (if the client device has been already assigned an IP before the crash). Syslogs are wiped on restart every time so today I decided to use my NAS as a syslog server so it could feed error messages to it. Nothing/no crash so far.
Similar issues can be seen on the TD-W8980, W8970 and the W8968. I believe it is a flaw in the firmware that leads the router to do intensive CPU work and then overheat (see heatsink replacement link). Some say it might be the NAT table being overloaded (out of bounds or poor memory allocation). Pretty much all these routers are passively cooled and rated with a ideal max temp of 40 degrees Celsius. I can tell you that by placing my hand over the case, it certainly feels like its hitting that threshold quite quickly.

Prime culprit seems to be related to torrents and a PLEX media laptop server setup I have going on with a QNAP NAS. I want to like this router. I really do. The menus are a breeze and when it works, its so snappy. My ISP (Eircom) modem router which is a rebranded Zyxel VMG8324-B10A is a load of muck and dies due to unstable firmware as well so I've no other option. I've posted a review on Amazon detailing this and will update it as soon as you release a definitive fix for the issue. Also something to note is the TD-W9980 is not in the list of selectable devices when posting on the forums so I had to edit the HTML combo box on the new thread page to cater for this. I am willing to try beta firmware (as long as patch notes are issued with them detailing whats changed).
Also, another issue that seems to occur in multiple TP-Link devices is that diagnostic tools will always seem to fail when testing DNS root for "Internet surfing" even though I can browse perfectly fine (until of course the modem router crashes!). This error occurs in every firmware available for the TD-W9980 for me.

Using an IR dot I measured 40C at the top
TOP shell at the middle 40C
Bottom on the sticker 50C
Disabling uPnP now...
Waiting 1 hrs
New temp ?

What's the temperature indoor and outdoor? Crashing continues even with UPnP disabled?

Possible problem
2015-06-28 02:25:31
Hi
I have been experiencing 5ghz dropouts and router crashes. I decided to buy a laptop cooler tray from poundland as it was the perfect size and now the router is working ok and keeping cool. I think the router is overheating and this is causing the problems. It could do with more vents in it. I updated to the latest firmware and it is working ok now with the fan attached

TD-W9980 still crashing after cooling intallation
2015-09-06 15:00:49
Hi All
I have bought the TD-W9980 two months ago to replace the default VDSL Wind router. Unfortunately seems that I have spend 80Euros for nothing . :(
Despite the promising look the device is not meeting my or from what I have seen in the thread our expectations. It is crashing all the time sometimes the wireless sometimes the NAT making everyone life miserable. In the beginning I believed that I can live without torrent downloads but the problem is not just that , It crashes when many devices are connected to it for unknown reasons (nothing on log entry to point where the issue may be). I am since it is still on warranty thinking to return it but I am afraid that it will be very difficult or possibly unwilling to reproduce the problems and verify the faults. So as a last hope I am going to join this forum to raise a strong voice with you hopping that TP-Link will have a look on the firmware of the device.
Regards
Panos

What's the firmware version of your W9980?
How many devices are connection when it crashes?
ADSL light and internet light are normal all the time?
Did you try to contact TP-LINK support team?

Firmware is the latest stable version I suppose (0.6.0 1.12 v0021.0 Build 150507 Rel.40130n)
unless there is a beta version around.
How many devices it is impossible to know because it crashes an I can't access it I have to reboot ...
but i believe that are between to 7-9 (phones, pads, pc,....).
Failure of lights actually has two states
[*]Failure an both DSL and internet light on
[*]Failure with only Internet light off (sometimes I can still access internet to the devices with fixed IP's)
Perhaps it is a good idea to raise a ticket an see what the support has to say. I will do that and update with the reply.

Im having the same problems.
I have the latest firmware (0.6.0 1.12 v0021.0 Build 150507 Rel.40130n) I think
I only connect about 6 devices and not all at the same time.
I can see from the lights the router does two things. Firstly I get frequent DSL and internet drops. I see the routers Sync and internet light go out and then it attempts to sync again.
Secondly, If the syc drops too often like every few minutes it always tries to reconnect. It then seems to get very warm. Then it appears to reset itself. All the lights go hard green and then go out, then it boots up again. When I go to look at the router stats page it has reset the time to 1970.
Is there any fix for this yet?
Will TP-Link give me a different model because it is ruining my upload and download speeds due to DLM thinking my line is not stable?

Same issue here
2015-12-16 23:35:53
I have the same issue, but with a TD-W8980, firmware:
0.6.0 1.8 v000e.0 Build 150514 Rel.40138n
It's getting really hot at times, so hot I can barely touch it, I'll try one of these laptop fan coolers sometime, but this shouldn't be necessary!
