Model: Deco E4
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version: default (I've never updated it)

Hi All,

I have been using a mesh with three Deco E4 units for almost a year with no problem. I bought them when NBN upgraded me to FTTP and 100Mbps plan. I was consistently getting roughly 80Mbps on the mesh (after 8pm) in speedtest (a lot less in real use of course). Recently I upgraded to a 250Mbps plan as it was only five dollars per month more. However, I am still getting roughly the same speed showing in speedtest. I contacted my provided (TPG) and they helped me determine the problem was not TPG but the mesh system.

The modem (TP-Link  V1600), with WiFi on, has two addresses, WiFi-xxxx and WiFi-xxxx-5G. I assume the 5G one is 5GHz, and the other one is 2.4GHz. I found that if I connect to the 5G address, speed test (standing next to the modem on a Sunday afternoon) was a tad over 200Mbps, beautiful! However connecting to the other address the speed showed about 23Mbps. Turning off the WiFi on the modem and plugging in a Deco E4 via Ethernet cable gave a speed of about 92Mbps, less than half the speed of the 5G connection. I would have thought it should have been similar to the 5G connection as the data was being delivered to the Deco at that speed (or faster). These results were all done within a few minutes of each other, so local traffic should have been similar for all of them.

I am confused by these results. It seems the Deco is receving the data at at least 200Mbps, but can only manage a speed of 92Mbps less than a meter away?

Is there a way to improve the performance of these units? Or do I have to go out and buy a whole new mesh system that can keep up with my modem?...

All advice gratefully received.

Deco E4 has 100Mbps Ethernet ports. It will not provide you with Internet speeds faster than that, because Main Deco E4 is connected to the modem over 100Mbps Ethernet link.

@Alexandre. Thanks for the clear explanation. I've exchanged many emails with my provider, TPG, and none of them were able to provide that information. Many thanks.

@Alexandre. I'm now more confused though. I tried connecting the Deco to the modem's wifi, but it would not connect (thinking it might connect to the 5G).

So, I'm wondering how speeds of 1.2Gbps are achievable with the Deco if the fastest it can receive data from a modem (or the internet) is 100Mbps? Or is that speed only achievable between Deco devices?

The speed they list is maximum theoretical combined WiFi speed for devices connected to Deco unit.

The actual Internet speed of your Deco mesh is limited by Main Deco 100Mbps Ethernet port. Main Deco must be connected by Ethernet cable to modem.

Hi, I know what you want to achieve but unfortunately if you only have an E4 deco the goal of getting a speed of 200mbps and above will not be achieved.
Since the main deco must be connected via an ethernet cable, and you only have an E4 deco whose ethernet port is only capable of 100mbps.
So my suggestion is to buy 1 Deco M4 at least or a series of decos above which is used as the main deco, then the rest deco E4 as a satellite but DO NOT CONNECT via ethernet but must be via wireless between decos.
Why is that? because the Deco M4 ethernet port supports up to 1,000Mbps. Therefore, the M4 must be set as the main deco.
Then the Deco E4 as a satellite via wireless because the E4 Wireless connection also supports up to 1,000Mbps. So don't link between decos via ethernet, only via wireless!!!

If you try this I'm sure the 200mbps speed you want to achieve will be successful ...

Note: Also check your modem (TP-Link  V1600) eternet port is it support for Gigabit connection (1.000Mbps)? If not, change the modem also that support Gigabit Ethernet port....

cheers

@ryg thanks for the reply and the explanation. It all makes sense. I wish I'd seen your reply earlier. I checked out some other websites and finally found the Deco x68 unit and ordered one. The M4 is quite a bit cheaper though, and would work as well... Such is life.
