After having tried openwrt and found it could only support up to about half of my gigabit speed, I wanted to reflash the factory firmware.  After many attempts, it eventually bricked, and now shows the single orange light.

I followed the debricking instructions explained https://www.tp-link.com/de/support/faq/1482/. The page comes up, I select one of the 3 available firmware for my (EU) model on the tp-link download site. All of them uploads apparently fine, the percentage count counts, then when it gets to 100% something flashes on the page, too fast to see, and I'm back to the beginning.

I've tried waiting, assuming it needed to complete stuff, but nothing happens, and after a reboot it's still bricked.  If I click the upgrade button without selecting/entering a file, a red text "Upgrade failed, the file is invalid".  I don't know if that's just a default error, or it displays the error that it should have shown instead of just flashing.

As i wrote before, I tried all 3 options. I extraced the zip file and uploaded the *.bin file - as is.  From other TP-link models it would seem that the restore file has to have a certain name, like for example ArcherC7v5_tp_recovery.bin but I assume this would be mentioned somewhere if it was the case?

Is there perhaps a specific recovery image that needs to be used?

After recovering the device to openwrt, I was able to restore the proprietary software though the openwrt restore option, by removing the headers from the proprietary software using this tool, graciously made by an openwrt contributor: https://argsnd.github.io/tp-link-stock-firmware-converter/index.html.

Hi @JohnnyCastaway,

Thank you for reporting your issue to community.
We understand that you may choose to install third-party firmware to improve the performance or function of your device. However, installing third-party firmware may introduce instability or even damage your device. These firmwares have not been officially tested and certified by us and may not meet the safety and performance standards of our products. We do not recommend the use of third-party firmware. According to your description, the product may have malfunctioned due to upgrading the third-party firmware. You need to try to restore it to the official firmware before we can continue to provide corresponding technical guidance. If you cannot restore it, according to our product warranty policy, we cannot provide you with warranty services.

@Joseph-TP I don't think I asked about your warranty policy. I asked the community to specifications around the otherwise very clever idea of a separate recovery system. It is odd I was able to restore another identical device this way, but not this. Same device, same software, same procedure.
Anyway, instead of being so worried about your warranty obligations you should perhaps consider how many are buying your devices because they can be modified with alternative software. Ever thought about that?

Now the interesting twist is - I was able to restore the OpenWRT "factory image" through the ax23's recovery subsystem, but doing the same with any of the tp-link official images bricks the device.   Like I already explained, there is a quick flash of some red text, but it goes to fast to read. Would be nice with some better software development and testing so at least it's possible to understand what goes wrong.  I have been able to debrick another ax23, an Archer C6 and Archer C7, so I'm sure I will succeed eventually.

Again, if tp-link would opensource their proprietary port drivers I'm sure OpenWRT would performa as well as the proprietary software. As it is, the only shortcoming of OpenWRT is that due to lack of hardware support of the tp-link ports, the ax23 maxes out at around 400 mbps with openwrt, and only the proprietary drivers allow for the full gigabit throughput.
