Along with the Deco APP upgrade, a new and long-expected feature has been added - Configuration Backup via Deco APP. This function allows users to export the current configuration information(including basic network settings, advanced function configurations, etc.) of the Deco and import these backup settings when setting up a Deco later under the same account.

What you need to have Configuration Backup on the Deco APP

To access the "Configuration Backup" feature on the Deco APP, please ensure you meet the following requirements.

  • Current Deco APP version is 3.8.3 or higher
  • The Deco is set to "Wireless Router" Mode
  • Logging into Deco APP via the Owner Account

***This function only needs the support of the Deco App, and it doesn't require updating your Deco to a specific firmware version.

Where to find this feature and how to use it

Go to Deco APP>More>System>Backup

Or when you try to "Remove" the main Deco, the app will pop up a prompt to remind the user whether to use the backup function:

After resetting the Deco and configuring it again under the same TP-Link account, you can select whether to "Create a New Network" or "Copy configuration settings from another network":

Q&A

Where will the backup files be stored?

The backup settings will be saved as Deco APP local data in the mobile phone storage and securely encrypted in the TP-Link Cloud. The local data will be deleted when the Deco APP is removed. For more details, please refer to TP-Link Privacy Policy

What happens if the new deco doesn't support all the advanced features in the backup file? Or can Deco X50 use the backup file of M5?

The backup file can still be used, but it will only restore the configuration settings that are compatible with the new Deco.

There are three similar features now that support keeping the current network configuration: Configuration BackupReplace Main DecoSet Main Deco. Which option should I choose?

The "Configuration Backup" is more recommended if you want to reset the current network and set it again without repeating the whole setup.

If you want to update the current main Deco with a new advanced model, it is suggested to use "replace main Deco" to transfer the network.

Moreover, the Deco APP also supports switching one of the satellite Mesh units as the main Deco for troubleshooting purposes if you suspect any issues with the current main unit.

Please feel free to comment below if you want to know more about this feature!
