Region : UnitedKingdom

Model : TL-PA511KIT

Hardware Version : V2

Firmware Version :

ISP :

This is my setup:
Room1
TL-PA511 connected to Virgin media hub
PC1 (linux) LAN connected to Virgin media hub

TL-PA4030 LAN connected to PC4 (linux)

Room2
TL-PA511 connected to PC2 (linux)

Room3
TL-PA4030 LAN connected to PC3 (linux)

The problem:
PC1 can ping PC2, PC3 & PC4, VH
PC2 can ping PC2, PC3 & PC4, VH
PC3 can ping PC2, PC1,VH but not PC4
PC4 can ping PC2, PC1, VH but not PC3,

As a test I moved PC3 and plugged it into the TL-PA4030 with PC4 and it all worked. I then moved the TL-PA4030 from Room1 to Room3 and everything worked. So I figure it must be a quality from two of the end points or something.

As another test I swapped one of the TL-PA511's with one of the TLPA4030's the problem did not move.

As another test I plugged the TL-PA4030 directly into the TL-PA511 in room 1 (yes you can do that because the TL-PA511 has a pass though) the problem remained that PC4 could not see PC. this is a bit odd I thought as not only did the problem remain, but nothing else broke.

As yet another test I plugged a laptop into the socket of TL-PA4030 with PC4 on and it had exactly the same problem (couldnt see PC3) but it can see the others and PC4.

To be honest there isn't really much of a reason other than I wanted PC4 on the other side of the room as to why I don't just use the three port device for PC1 & PC4. It does bug me though that it doesn't work and I cant figure out why.

Anyone got any ideas?

It is very easy to debug this kind of problem.

Just use TP-LINK powerline utility, and this utility will help you detect all the TP-LINK powerline adapters in the same powerline network.
So please try to use powerline utility to see if all your four TP-LINK powerline adapters are already in the same powerline network.

At last, please tell me your test results.

Yes they are all on same Power line network. In fact if you think about it communications would not work the way I have described if they were not. For example I explained that if I moved the power line adapter to a different power point in another room everything worked. If it was on a different network this would not happen. Unfortunately due to most of the clients running linux, using you powerline utility isn't really a very easy option. However I will get a laptop with windows on it and see which adapters are seen from each point.

To be honest my question was more about the internal workings of the power-line and how it handles its network. The behavior I have seen would indicate that the communications on the power line are in fact point to point. So even though the light on the front shows it connected it would indicate that this is only to anotherr Powerline adapter, it does not indicate that it can connect to all power line adapters.

Powerline communication is definitely point to multiple points communication.
I have to say your problem is so strange as I haven't received similar problem feedback from other customers before.

Anyway the electric noise may interfere Powerline communication which could cut off the powerline connection between your powerline adapters.
