Expected wifi speed?

Expected wifi speed?

Model: Deco M9 Plus
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.6

I have a handful of Deco M9 units. One of them functions as the router, and after VLAN tagging, it is now connected directly to my modem. From my internet provider, I receive 1000 Mbit/s download and 1000 Mbit/s upload.

When I measure the speed between the modem and the Deco router (using the Deco app’s built-in tool), I get 524 Mbit/s download and 767 Mbit/s upload.

When I measure the Wi-Fi speed using Ookla’s Speedtest (standing right next to the router), I get around 225 Mbit/s download and roughly the same for upload. That’s less than 25% of the speed coming into the house.

Is this kind of drop normal?
Is there anything I can adjust in the setup? The drop becomes even more significant (of course) on my other Deco access points (they are wireless).

P.S.: I’ve had a measurement done confirming that the ISP is indeed delivering 1000 Mbit/s / 1000 Mbit/s, so the drops are happening after that point.

I used to have Deco M9 Plus. I have gigabit Internet.

On desktop PC wired to second Ethernet port of Main Deco I had 950Mbps. On smartphone wirelessly connected to Main Deco I have seen speeds reaching 630Mbps, and in multiple tests hovering around 400 Mbps.

If you have desktop or laptop with gigabit Ethernet port, I would suggest wiring it to Main Deco to run speed tests from it. Maybe Deco app speed test tool has issues, or maybe you are really not getting speeds promised by an ISP and then the first step would be to check, why.

"I’ve had a measurement done confirming that the ISP is indeed delivering 1000 Mbit/s / 1000 Mbit/s" - can you explain, how did you do these meaurements?

@Alexandre. My ISP had a certain program I ran with my laptop connected to the mesh-router.... (an iPerf tool they made me run)

Connect  laptop to second Ethernet port of Main Deco and run same speed test on it. You should be getting close to gigabit speeds, same as when laptop is connected to modem.

  @Alexandre. I'll try that.

Just wondering: Might a replacement of the deco router with a 'real' gigabit wifi router - and changing all decos to access points - be a better solution?

This may be a better solution. Even better, if your ISP could provide you with their Router for free (as a part of Internet package). This is how I run my Deco mesh: ISP Router with its WiFi turned off and Deco mesh in AP mode.

When I had my ISP troubleshoot issues with wired link from my house they initially dismissed was their fault, I powered off Deco mesh, connected PC directly to ISP Router and provided them with data they can't deny.

@Alexandre. I had that setup before (bridge mode). Same wifi speed.

The whole idea is to have ISP modem/router in its default gateway mode (not bridge mode) and have Deco mesh connect to it in Access Point mode.
