IoT Devices on 2.4GHz Only Connecting to Deco X60 Instead of Nearby M9 Plus

Hello everyone,
I’m facing an issue with my TP-Link Deco Mesh network and was hoping someone could help. My setup includes:
- 2 Deco X60 routers (one as the main unit)
- 4 Deco M9 Plus units distributed across my home
- Around 40 IoT devices based on ESP
Recently, I created a separate IoT network using the Deco app, ensuring it only operates on 2.4GHz to improve connectivity for my IoT devices. However, I’ve noticed that all my IoT devices are connecting only to one of the Deco X60 units, even when they are physically much closer to a Deco M9 Plus, which also supports 2.4GHz.
This is causing performance issues, as the IoT devices are not being evenly distributed among the mesh nodes. I’ve already checked the Mesh network settings, but I can’t seem to find a way to force them to connect to the nearest node.
Has anyone experienced this before? Any tips on how to fix it and improve the distribution of IoT devices in the mesh network?
Thanks in advance for any help! 😊

Firmware 1.6.4 does not support IoT Network functionality. To have it on M9 Plus, you'll need to wait till TP-Link releases firmware 1.7.* or 1.8.* for M9 Plus V2.
Under normal circumstances you should not have been able to configure IoT Network when there are Deco units in Deco mesh which do not support it. Is it possible you had just X60 initially and configured IoT Network with it, then added M9 Plus to your Deco mesh?

Hi, Can I also have the firmware version of Deco M9 Plus?
-If it is on 1.2.11, please update to the latest 1.6.4 first-How to Update the Firmware of Deco
After that, IOT network devices should also support connection preference that allows to customize the connected Deco:

Hi @David-TP
Thanks for your answer.
The firmware version of my Deco M9 Plus is 1.6.4 Build 20240718 Rel.76925, and the hardware version is 2.0. I always try to keep my firmware updated to the latest version.
I made the same tests and even when I manually set IoT devices to connect to a specific Deco M9 Plus, they fail to establish a connection. It seems that when enabling the IoT network, it only exists on the Deco X60, and the M9 units do not broadcast it.
Do you have any suggestions on how I can resolve this?
Thanks.

Hi @Alexandre.
Thank you for your response and clarification regarding the IoT Network functionality on the M9 Plus. I now understand what happened.
Regarding your question, when I initially configured the IoT Network, both the M9 Plus and the X60 were already part of the Deco mesh network.
Do you have any estimated release date for firmware 1.7.* or 1.8.* for the M9 Plus V2?
I appreciate your support.

Hi Alexandre, Thank you for the correction!
There was a 1.8.x version for Deco M9 Plus. However, It was pulled for the issue here:https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/739672
It would be great to wait for this issue to be officially addressed. But if you want to test this 1.8.0 version, you could leave me a message.
Thank you very much and best regards.

Hi @David-TP,
Yes, I would like to test version 1.8.0. Although I use Netflix, YouTube, MS Teams, and Google services, I will monitor their performance. If I find any issues, I will downgrade to the current version.
Thanks for your support.

Hi @David-TP
I am still experiencing issues with my current TP-Link Deco mesh network setup. The 2.4GHz IoT network configured on the Deco X60 does not cover all my distributed IoT devices, and the Deco M9 Plus units do not extend the 2.4GHz IoT network due to current firmware limitations.
To address the coverage problem, I am considering purchasing the TP-Link TL-WA850RE Wi-Fi 300Mbps signal repeater. Could you please advise if this repeater would resolve the coverage issues or if there are alternative solutions I should explore?
