What exactly do you mean by "making re705 a hot spot"?

In case you mean to connect the RE705 to the VR400 via Ethernet cable, then you need to set the RE705 to "Access Point" mode. Look for a "Mode" button in the admin webpage.

What I mean was re705x ( its tech spec is very impressive )  should have made a big improvement when it joined to vr 400's Onemesh, but no luck, then,  I started to consider ( as you said) connecting with hard wire to Archer vr 400 and then make it a hot spot, then I may have to take advantage of this beast.

question: is there a new firmware out there but it can't find it when I run the check for the firmware update

Archer vr400   firmware 1.5.0.0.9.1 v00a 1.0 build 220321 rel 60385n

Looks like you already have the latest firmware installed on the VR400 and for the RE705 V2 TP-Link hasn't published any updates on their support website.
