I have 1Gb from BT. Connecting via Ethernet directly to BT model I get download speed of 932MB, via Ethernet directly to main deco I get download speed of 889Mb. But on wifi (with nothing between me and the deco and about 6ft away) the speed drops to 400Mb. I have rebooted, checked for latest firmware, turned of QoS and Parental controls but doesn't get any faster.

The associated speed is also called link speed between the network device and your client device, which is limited by specifications of both devices.
For your situation, apparently, it is limited by your client device.
Usually, the actual internet speed is about 40%-50% of the link speed, which is suitable for all wireless devices. So the wireless internet speed tested by you was normal.
You may change different clients and connect them to 5GHz band of the Deco network and compare the link speed(referring to the guide) and internet speed(using www.speedtest.net).
