Hello,

I have an existing mesh system with 4 deco x90.

The main building and other parts kind of a labyrinth, that's why i've choosed 4 pcs of x90 a few years ago.

It's working, the intro part is only for highlighting the importance of range/cover.

Right now there is no standalone router, only use the isp's gadget.

For different reasons I need to buy a router and integrate into the existing mesh system, that would be where the main deco unit is placed now, and use this x90 for strength a blind part.

My questions: can I use tplink mesh router as a main mesh unit instead of a deco?

Which mesh router do you suggest if the range should be at least on x90's level?

Price is not an issue for this unit.

Thank you for your help.

Deco mesh is a TP-Link proprietary technology which is not compatible with Easymesh routers - details.

Eventually in the future some Deco models would be able to support Easymesh as well - details.

Meanwhile you can use an Easymesh router as described in this FAQ.

So if I use a router, decos should be used as APs.

Is there any disadvantage using decos as AP instead of mesh network?

Any router which has the same or better range than x90?

Thank you.

I don't know what's the range of X90 but while using Deco in AP mode, Deco units would still be in mesh - that's is to avoid a double NAT caused by adding a router.

Ok, thanks a lot.

Only question left which router is the best in terms of range?

Fyi x90 is tri brand, has a 30db antenna for 5ghz and 20db for 2.4ghz.

Also if the router will work as general one and the decos as APs, I can choose whatever brand I find, right?

Eventually in the future some Deco models would be able to support Easymesh as well - details. If you're after all devices in mesh, you can look for a router like Archer AX73.

If you don't need the router to be in a mesh with Deco units, you can use another brand router as well to implement this scenario.

Ok I probably get it now.

Hopefully x90 will get the update as well.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, thanks for posting question here.

I am a little confused about your question at the beginning:  (My questions: can I use tplink mesh router as a main mesh unit instead of a deco?)

Why do you prefer a mesh router instead of a Deco?

One Deco can be a standalone wireless router/DSL modem router/LTE router/5G router. You may refer to all Deco models from the official website.

What is the requirement of standalone router you mentioned?

I can not know when Deco X90 can support Easymesh, but All Decos can set up a Deco mesh network always.

Thanks and best regards.

Because I need wired ports, the isp's gadget has not got enough.

Hi, thanks for your further explanation.

You may also consider add unmanaged switch in the Deco network. And this guide is for your reference.

Happy new year!

I was thinking on that also previously, but for some reasons i've moved forward to a router.

Can't recall why other than I need another amplify unit, so one more deco but rather a router.

Maybe also because of the ports?

So all the deco units are far from each other, connected wireless, no backhaul.

Let's say I connect isp and main deco on 1gbe port and a switch to the 2,5gbe port where I can again connect wired for example NAS, pc, etc.

Are you saying it will simply work like this?
