Model: Archer BE800
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.6 20240808 rel.26673(4555)

I'm trying to connect to an external VPN via Windows VPN (PPTP). This works fine if I use my hotspot from my mobile phone (bypassing the Archer BE800). Also works fine from other networks. But when trying to connect from home (where I have BE 800) it fails. Tried both with Workstation (Ethernet) with Windows 10 and with my laptop using the Wifi via BE800.

Credentials phase seems fine quickly connecting and accepting them but then it loads for about 60 sec. and then error:

"The vpn connection between your computer and the vpn server could not be completed. The most common cause for this failure is that at least one Internet device between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation protocol packets. "

Error message on laptop Win11:The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed....

Settings on the VPN is Allow Microsoft CHAP V2.

Enable  LCP connections.

There is no ISP device in between or before my computers and Archer BE800. SFP optical fiber directly into Archer BE800.

Workstation is Windows 10 Ethernet directly to router and laptop is Windows 11 using Wifi6.

Any idea what could be hindering the connection?

Hi,

You might want to verify that "PPTP Passthrough" is activated in the menu "Advanced" -> "Security" -> "ALG".

Although, on the TP-Link routers I own this was activated by default, so I would be surprised if it was switched off on your BE800.

@Dhurke

I agree with woozle that the PPTP Passthrough should be enabled by default. Please check this setting.

If it is enabled and you still can't connect to the external VPN, I recommend replacing the BE800 with another router connected to the SFP optical fiber. This will help confirm if the network allows external VPN connections.

If the issue is confirmed to be caused by the BE800, we will be happy to investigate that further.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Everything is enabled in ALG. I contacted the ISP and they confirmed they don't have any restrictions on VPN or PPTP. I checked PPTP GRE protocol 47 and port 1723 in inbound/outbound firewall rules and they all were allowed. Finally we tried changing the VPN server to L2TP instead of PPTP and that worked right away. Still I'm quite sure that it is the router that is stopping PPTP from working since it works fine from other networks or if I use my mobile hotspot to bypass the router.
