If your router uses a WiFi technology higher than WiFi 5, don't worry too much, as such routers will also save backward compatible Wi-Fi technology. So RE315 is likely to be able to expand the router's network wirelessly.

If you want to configure it as an Access point, you can only connect the RE315's only Ethernet port to the router to obtain the network. In this way, RE315 cannot provide network to powerline devices.

However, for Powerline network, it is recommended that you connect it directly to the router, because if RE315 obtains the network from the router via wireless, its network speed and stability will not be as good as the router's.

The wireless router actually supports Wi-Fi 4, so can I assume TP-Link's range extenders are also backward compatible to this protocol?

I was originally looking at the RE300 as it's been reviewed as a very good budget extender with quick speeds and reliable connectivity. It also has 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ bands but doesn't have an ethernet port - hence my consideration of the RE315.

Although I understand that it's not recommended to output powerline from a TP-Link extender's ethernet port, it would still be useful to connect devices directly to an extender's port - but the RE315's port acts only as a wireless access point.

So I'm struggling to find an extender in the 300 series with a port that can be used to connect devices via an ethernet cable with the same performance as the RE300 and dual 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ bands.

There is the TLWA850RE whose ethernet port acts as an ethernet bridge while maintaining its extender function - but I believe only provides the slower 2.4GHZ band.

Is there a product I've missed at this level that is both an extender and a booster, provides both 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ bands, while also having a port that acts as an ethernet bridge into which devices can be connected directly?

According to your needs, RE315 is indeed a better choice. However, if your router supports Wi-Fi 4, its wireless speed may not be very high. After transmitting to the range extender, the speed obtained by the range extender may not be ideal.

Yes, from the spec of RE315, it supports both WiFi5 and WiFi 4.
