Model: Deco X55
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.5.5

I'm struggling to setup our Deco X55 mesh network (1 main, 2 nodes).

I have an xFi Gateway that I switched to enable Bridge Mode (turning off its Wi-Fi capabilities). Based on what I understood from this forum and other online resources, I should enable AP mode on the Deco, which should effectively make my Deco the Wi-Fi + Mesh network for the whole home. However, the Deco will not recognize the internet connection physically connected by ethernet cable. Basically, I end up with NO internet at all.

I reversed this and disabled Bridge Mode on the xFi Gateway but kept AP mode on. Now ALL devices are ONLY connected to the main Deco and the nodes have become useless - no devices connect to it. Also, internet speeds are back in 2005 (very slow) and I don't know why this is not working....I am thinking of going back to wi-fi mode again as at least the speeds were decent.

Before all these changes, I had Deco in Wi-Fi Mode and the issue there (as many report online) is that some devices get confused by running 2 networks (with the same SSID but different passwords) - I was trying to solve this and create only a single network that is mesh but fail to do so

Appreciate any help!

Hi, welcome to the community.

May I know the model number of your Xfinity Gateway?

-I think it might depend on how the "Bridge Mode" on the Xfi gateway works.

Usually, when the gateway router is set to bridge mode, it no longer performs as a DHCP router so Deco needs to work in "Wireless router mode".

Sometimes, the ISP gateway router doesn't have "Bridge mode". We will suggest users disable their WiFi to avoid the WiFi overlapping. However, the ISP gateway still has the DHCP function. In this way, "Access Point" mode is recommended.

For your case, it is like the first one and when you set Xfi Gateway to "Bridge mode", Deco needs to be kept in router mode.

Thank you very much and best regards.

Thanks for your reply!

I believe you are correct in your assessment and the first scenario is what's happening. The xFi Gateway model name is the "XB7-T". Bridge mode is currently DISABLED on the Gateway Modem and Deco X55 router is in Access Point mode with Smart DHCP enabled. It appears that the various connected devices have started to connect to the closest Deco node. When I first posed my question, nearly all devices were connected to the Deco device that is physically connected by ethernet to the Modem. Internet speeds and stability seems adequate.

So if I follow you correctly, you recommend that if I ENABLE bridge mode, I need to keep the Deco in Wifi Mode? What would be the advantage of these settings compared to the current settings?

Hi, Thanks for the feedback.

I checked the FAQ of xFi Gateway-"XB7-T", it mentioned that:

https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/wireless-gateway-enable-disable-bridge-mode

To do this on our network, you'll have to enable the Bridge Mode feature on your wireless gateway, which turns off its routing capabilities while leaving the modem capabilities on. Then, you may connect and use your own router.

Note: Any ethernet port can be used but only one device can be connected to the gateway while in Bridge Mode.

-So, yes, you need to keep Deco in "Wireless router"mode when Bridge mode is enabled.

For the difference of Deco in AP mode and router mode, you could refer to

What’s the difference between Access Point mode and Router mode on the Deco?

The decision might depend on whether you prefer using Deco or the X87 work as the DHCP router. If there are some advanced features that X87 has but Deco didn't, the current setup would be recommened. While if you plan to make full use of Deco advanced featues, Deco will be recommened to work as the DHCP router.

Best regards.
