I hope this message finds you well.

I am currently using the X73 DSL modem provided by your service, connected to my Deco X60 V3.2 device. However, I am unable to change the DNS information received from your service provider on the X73 DSL modem. It is essential for me to manually configure the DNS settings according to my preferences.

I do not understand why this restriction is in place and why I am not permitted to modify the DNS settings. The device does not support DoH/DoT, VPN, or any other additional features; it solely functions as a device to connect to the internet. Therefore, this limitation seems illogical and unnecessary.

I kindly request your assistance in resolving this issue. Please provide the necessary steps or guidance to enable manual DNS configuration on my modem.

Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

Best regards,

Hi, I'm afraid Deco X73-DSL doesn't support changing the IPV4 DNS under "DSL modem router mode". You could edit the LAN DNS under Deco APP>More>Advanced>DHCP.

May I know why you want to edit the WAN/IPv4 DNS on the Deco X73-DSL?

Thank you very much and best regards.

Dear @David-TP ,

I appreciate your response regarding the Deco X73-DSL's limitations in modifying IPv4 DNS settings under the "DSL modem router mode." I understand that adjustments can be made via the LAN DNS settings in the Deco App under More > Advanced > DHCP. However, this approach does not fully address my concerns.

Rationale for Modifying WAN/IPv4 DNS Settings:

  1. Privacy Concerns: Utilizing the default DNS servers provided by my Internet Service Provider (ISP) may allow them to monitor my online activities and potentially share this data with third parties, thereby compromising my online privacy.

  2. Security Risks: ISP-assigned DNS servers might redirect traffic to malicious websites, increasing the risk of phishing attacks and unauthorized data access.

Limitations of Adjusting LAN DNS via DHCP:

Modifying the LAN DNS settings through DHCP does not entirely prevent DNS queries from being routed through the ISP's servers. Consequently, DNS requests may still leak, undermining the intended privacy and security enhancements.

Benefits of Allowing WAN/IPv4 DNS Configuration:

  • Enhanced Security: Permits the use of reliable DNS servers that can block access to harmful sites, thereby protecting connected devices.

  • Improved Privacy: Enables the selection of DNS servers that do not log user activities, thus safeguarding personal data.

  • Optimized Performance: Allows the choice of faster DNS servers, leading to quicker website load times and a more responsive internet experience.

Given these considerations, the ability to modify WAN/IPv4 DNS settings is crucial for maintaining the desired levels of privacy and security. I kindly request that TP-Link consider implementing this feature in future firmware updates for the Deco X73-DSL.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Best regards.
