Hi my Archer C9 has been extremely reliable but hasn't had a firmware update since May 2016.

Given the patches that Linux has had since then, recent issues found by DLink and the number of firmware updates other routers get, is it safe to continue to run please?

BTW, I use the C9 as a router from my Virgin cable box with a BT whole home mesh network providing

any advice gratefully received

kind regards Malc

The Archer C9 v1 is not safe to run on 8+ year firmware due to security risks, performance issues, compatibility with new technologies, and manufacturer support issues. Firmware updates often address vulnerabilities, so running outdated firmware may expose 10.0.0.0.1 10.0.0.1 the device to known threats. Additionally, outdated firmware may limit the router's ability to function optimally with newer technology. It is recommended to update the firmware to the latest stable version available from the manufacturer's website, ensuring compatibility with the new firmware version.

@Digiteeruk Please check TP-Link End of Life Products
Your router is long past EOL so, no, it not safe to use.

Running the Archer C9 v1 router on firmware that is 8+ years old is generally not recommended for a few reasons:

  1. Security Risks: Firmware updates often include security patches that protect against vulnerabilities. Running outdated firmware leaves your device exposed to potential security threats, as any vulnerabilities discovered in the last few years would likely not be patched in older firmware versions.

  2. Performance Issues: Newer firmware versions typically include optimizations that can improve the performance and stability of your router. Running on old firmware may mean you're missing out on important bug fixes and performance improvements.

  3. Feature Limitations: Over time, manufacturers may add new features to their devices through firmware updates. By sticking with an outdated version, you may miss out on useful functionality and improvements that could enhance your network experience.

  4. Compatibility: Some newer devices or technologies may not be fully compatible with old firmware versions. For example, certain wireless standards, security protocols (e.g., WPA3), or newer networking features might not work as intended without the latest firmware.

Recommendations:

  • Update Firmware: If possible, update to the latest available firmware version for your Archer C9 v1. You can check the TP-Link website for the latest updates, but make sure to follow the official instructions carefully to avoid any issues during the update process.

  • Backup Settings: Before updating, it's always a good idea to back up your current settings in case the update process requires a reset or causes any changes.

  • Consider Replacement: If the router has been running for many years and no longer receives updates, it may be time to consider upgrading to a newer model, as technology and security standards have likely advanced significantly in the past 8 years.

In summary, running 8+ year-old firmware is not safe and can expose you to risks. Always keep your device updated to ensure better security, performance, and features.

  @Digiteeruk

I had the same problem and also had an Archer C9 v1, for which there have been no updates for a long time because it is EOL.

You can do two things:

1. Replace the Archer C9 with another current router.

2. Since the Archer C9 v1 is also supposed to be compatible with openWRT and DD-WRT, you can also install an alternative firmware and at least stay up to date.

However, switching to an alternative firmware is at your own risk.

I chose the first option.

  @Digiteeruk

The Archer C9 v1 router is not recommended to run on 8+ year-old firmware due to several reasons. These include security vulnerabilities, performance issues, feature limitations, compatibility problems, and potential stability and reliability issues. Older firmware may lack new features or enhancements, such as improved wireless standards, QoS improvements, or advanced security protocols. Long periods without updates can cause the router to become unstable, leading to random reboots, connection drops, or failures to recognize connected devices properly.

To update the Archer C9 v1 router, check for firmware updates on TP-Link's official website, backup current settings, follow the update instructions carefully, and consider a hardware upgrade if the router is still on its original firmware after 8+ years. If the device is no longer receiving updates or if the updates don't improve functionality, it might be time to explore newer hardware for a better experience.
