Hello

I'm experiencing an odd issue with my TP-Link AX10 router and need some help. When I use the router in wireless router mode, my download speed drops to 30 Mbps despite being connected with a Cat 6 cable to my main ISP-provided Huawei HG8245X6 modem.

However, when I plug the same Cat 6 cable directly into my PC, I get 950 Mbps easily, and the same applies when I switch the AX10 to access point mode—I can get full speeds (950 Mbps) without any issues.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • I've reset the TP-Link AX10 to default settings, but the issue persists.
  • Tried both the WAN and LAN ports of the AX10, still facing the 30 Mbps speed in router mode.
  • When I switch to access point mode, I get the full speed with no problems whether it be wan or lan ports.
  • Tried disabling and enabling QoS.
  •

The issue seems isolated to wireless router mode. I’ve ruled out the cable and ISP connection, as both work fine when tested directly with my PC or in access point mode. Any ideas on why the TP-Link AX10 isn't giving me full speeds in router mode, and how I can fix it?

P.S.: My main objective was to set a universal dns for my devices, which works in wireless router mode, but when I set the DCHP dns to 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1 in access point mode it doesn't transfer to my devices. So thanks in advance for any help!

Reset AX10 to its factory defaults - press reset button for about 10 sec. Don't turn on QoS.

Check your ethernet ports negotiated speed when in wireless router mode here:

It should be 1000mbps if you want to utilize its full bandwidth.

If negotiated speed is 100mbps then use another ethernet cable.

Your issue is quite similar to one described in this thread.

I've stated in my post that QoS was disabled, also yes, the ethernet status page already displays all connected ethernet cables at 1000Mbps Full Duplex.

Hi  @Merkaloff

Thank you for all the troubleshooting and valuable information you provided.

May I know if your network topology diagram is as follows:

Cable modem—router)))((( client devices

(Note: — stands for wired connection,)))((( stands for wireless connection )

In addition, you mentioned that you tested the speed of the WAN port and LAN port in router mode and they are both 30Mbps. May I know how did you test it?

Because the WAN port is used to connect to the front-end modem, you should not be able to test the speed of the WAN port. So I would like to confirm with you again how you tested it or what specific parameter did you test?

I connected the Cat6 cable from the Huawei modem to the WAN port of the TP-Link AX10 while it was in wireless router mode, but the speed on Speedtest.net was capped at 30 Mbps (even though Windows 11 Ethernet settings showed the port as 1000 Mbps capable). However, when I switched the AX10 to access point mode, I got 950 Mbps on speedtest. This applied to both the WAN and LAN ports when tested, meaning: when I connected the Cat 6 cable coming out of the Huawei modem to the WAN ports, tested it on speedtest, and then the LAN ports, and tested it as well, both got me 950Mbps.

Hi  @Merkaloff

Thank you very much for your valued reply.

For further analysis, please connect a modem to the WAN port of Archer AX10, and then compare the link speed from PC to Archer AX10 in router mode and access point mode and provide screenshots of the test results.

The specific instructions are as follows:

How to check the associated/link speed on a wired client

Note:Please make sure that speed limit functions such as speed limit and qos are turned off.

In addition, please compare whether the wired speed and wireless speed of other client devices are very different when it is connected to Archer AX10 working in router mode? If you can, please tell me what are the specific results? This step is to confirm whether the problem is caused by a specific client.

Thank you.
