Hello. I'm looking to buy a Wifi 7 capable Deco unit within the next few months. Wanted to get opinions on whether this will be useful for my current set up or not.
 

I basically have three internet service providers, all running in one home network. There is no load balancing of any sort involved as most solutions I've tried that address this, from Edge routers, to the ER line of routers, don't exactly deliver results consistent enough for me to be happy with, are too slow, or simply do not respond in the expected way. Add to this the fact that ISP connections in my region of the world have a higher chance of going offline all of a sudden, the need to immediately find out which connection isn't working at any given time (so that a call to the ISP can be made ASAP) is always present. Liveness, connection quality and response, are far more prioritized over maximum connection speed.

 

So right now the set up is as follows:
Connection 1: ISP router -> BE230 (DHCP enabled) -> switch
Connection 2: ISP router -> another BE230 (DHCP disabled) -? switch
Connection 3: same as connection 2
The entire home network is wired.

 

All SSIDs are the same across all wireless enabled routers. EasyMesh has not been turned on though I tried it once making connection 1's BE230 the master unit, and it seems that the two other redundant ISP gateways can be pointed to without any issues.

 

All other family members use connection 1 by default. All my personal PCs and servers use connection 2 (gateway and DNS manually set in all devices). All our mobile devices use connection 3 (gateway and DNS manually set in all devices). At any given time, an ISP connection that goes down becomes obvious right away. Switching to another ISP connection becomes a simple matter of changing one digit in your device's gateway settings.

 

My question is, if say, I buy a 5-pack Deco mesh system and set 3 of them to Wifi Router mode, each one having their own distinct gateways, while the other two will serve as satellites to the main Deco unit, will their wireless performance be any different from me setting all other units to satellite AP mode (1 master + 4 satellites)?
 

The two other backup ISP connections are connected to units that don't assign IP addresses anyway and can be manually pointed to on any device. Is there going to be any fundamental difference from having 3 units running on Wifi Router mode versus only one in the latter case? 

Currently looking at BE85 and BE95.

 you have a very interesting scheme for building a network infrastructure)

Why not make a reservation instead of multi wan balancing?

remove 3 connections, increase speed on the other two

channel reservation on omada routers works correctly

and frankly speaking I didn't quite understand the essence of your question at the end)

if you are asking about the difference in performance between router/access point modes, there shouldn't be any

naturally everything needs to be connected via cable

Do you need an additional dhcp server on deco to ensure that internet switching works correctly without manual configuration on wifi clients?

although in your case I would still review the network configuration as suggested above, and then assemble everything on Omada

Thank you! This is all I really needed to know, never having owned any Deco hardware or mesh system in the past. The present system is just a bunch of BE230s broadcasting the same SSIDs for all frequencies, each having their own different internet gateways, with EasyMesh turned off. I assume that when walking into another device's sphere of coverage, the device connection handoff would not be as smooth compared to if one were using a mesh system?

Yes, each BE230 has its own fixed IP address outside the range of the DHCP server's assignable IP addresses. If I understood what you mean by balancing, I've removed any form of load balancing in the network because connection liveness drops much more often here than in other countries. Speed isn't much of an issue. When a connection goes down, identifying the culprit quickly and stressing that company over the phone becomes semi-essential in getting faster service, as sometimes the issue can be ignored on their end and persist for weeks if one doesn't complain. I find that this isn't easy to notice, test, and figure out when there's load balancing in the network.

Unforunately it's not exactly rare for 2 connections to simultaneously go down, with me praying that the last internet connection doesn't suddenly conk out before one of the other 2 gets repaired.

if easy mesh was enabled on BE230, then there was a smooth transition with them too

but for this they must be on the same network.

so connecting deco over your current network will fix this situation

naturally, deco must also be in the same network with other deco to create roaming

if from details, then easyt mesh supports only 2 protocols of seamless roaming 802.11 k/v

while deco mesh supports all 3 802.11 r/k/v protocols

I still think it is worth making a reservation: if there are a lot of devices connected to deco in router mode (30 or more), then some part of the performance will still be given to servicing dhcp clients.

you mentioned that you still have servers, so port forwarding will be done

still, I believe that if there are some fine-tuning and the number of clients is relatively large, then for the sake of greater wifi performance it is still worth switching deco to access point mode
