5G connection only using LTE bands and never the NR5G band
Hi,
I live pretty much in the middle of multiple cell towers, because of that the reception is fairly weak and depends on the weather. I replaced my old LTE modem with a X50-5G and an external MIMO antenna (covers 700-3800MHz) directed to a tower in hopes that the lower frequency 700MHz 5G band would have a higher penetration and therefore better overall reception. The ISP I am using has set up a 5G NSA network with LTE bands B1/B3/B8/B20 and a single NR5G band N28 (I don't think they have 5G SA enabled yet). I've been running the setup for some weeks now, it would seem that when enabling the 5G mode in the router (5G Preferred) the connection and especially the upload speeds are slightly more stable than with 4G, but that might be just luck as well. On the other hand, just last night the reception was particularly bad because of snowing and the router got itself to a red light state and could only recover by unplugging and re-plugging it to the power (as suggested by these instructions), this never happened while the SNR was around 10dB or more.
Everything is set to automatic in the settings. I haven't touched the band, carrier or cell lock features yet, because I'm concerned they might make the situation worse and not allow it to switch to the better bands when the weather changes. I've seen screenshots on this forum that show both LTE and NR5G bands in use, but for me it's always a combination of B1/B3/B8/B20 (anything from a single band to 3 bands) and never N28. In the case of the attached screenshot it's using a B3 PCC and a B8 SCC, which is a pretty typical scenario, but no N28. The QCAINFO also lists different bands depending on when I'm checking, but the NR5G band 28 is consistently the last on the list. It's as if the device is trying to use as high frequency bands as possible, which makes sense if they're all LTE bands, but doesn't make sense in NSA mode if 5G is preferred.
While I do understand that in NSA mode the PCC is always going to be an LTE band, why isn't the router using the N28 band that shows up in QCAINFO and which should get a strong signal? Is there anything I should change in the settings to make it use the N28 band for data transfer? Hope you could shed some light on this situation and give advice on what I might want to try to get a true 5G connection I got this device for, thank you!
