Hi all,

 

I’m currently running my Deco X50 device in Access Point (AP) Mode, but I’m having trouble connecting my home server via LAN. When in Router Mode, I can connect the server through LAN without any issues, and I can even set up a static IP for the server using the Deco app. However, as soon as I switch back to AP Mode, the basic LAN connection to my server fails.

 

I’ve noticed that switching to Router Mode does solve the issue, but I’d prefer to keep my Deco in Access Point Mode. I ran some speed tests, and I found that Router Mode drops my bandwidth by around 5-10% in some cases and increases my ping times, so I’d like to avoid using it if possible.

 

Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions on how I can keep my Deco in AP Mode and still maintain a stable LAN connection to my home server? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Update: The issue stemmed from my server caching its DHCP configuration instead of depending on the router for IP assignments. After adjusting the DHCP settings, I encountered some connectivity issues between devices on different sub-networks (e.g., from 5GHz WiFi to 2.4GHz WiFi or from WiFi to LAN). However, with a few tweaks on the router, the devices can now communicate seamlessly across networks.

This is not correct. I run Deco mesh in AP mode and I have three devices hardwired directly to three Deco units: Smart TV, printer, desktop PC.

When I run speedtest on desktop PC I am getting gigabit speeds, which is what my Deco M5 Ethernet port is capable of. No issues with this setup whatsoever.

 

I don't know what is wrong in your setup, can't properly troubleshoot it remotely, so just offering workarounds that should work. Your idea of a switch between Main Deco and ISP Router is good one, it should work, too. I would suggest TP-Link gigabit unmanaged 5-port switch, unless you already have one you could try.

If that's the case, then I better check the client configuration (my server) first, it might be trying to request IP from an invalid subnet and it could be failing because of that.

 

Otherwise, I'll give the switch approach a try and see how it goes.

With Deco mesh running in AP mode you can connect your file server to ISP router, which you have in front of Deco mesh. This is what I do at my home: my Synology NAS is hardwired to ISP router, Deco mesh runs in AP mode.

Thanks for getting back to me. I’m facing some constraints with the setup of the ISP router due to limited space and cable management issues, which makes adding an extra cable to the router challenging. That’s why I was hoping to connect the server directly to the Deco devices for greater flexibility.

 

So, to confirm, the LAN ports on the Deco devices are inactive when they’re in AP mode, correct?

 

Currently, I have the Main Deco connected to the router with a LAN cable, and I intended to connect the server to the Deco via cable as well. If that won’t work, I may look into alternatives, like adding a switch between the router and the Deco to connect both the server and the Deco to it.
