Model: Deco P9
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Hello, I have 3 p9s in my home which provide ample coverage for the house. However I have a summerhouse in the garden about 10 metres away from the actual house and I bought the mesh to be able to run the WiFi to there as well. I've tried putting a node in there and it simply won't work, seems to be too far from the house WiFi and the power line backhaul is useless. I have 1GB broadband and maximum I get is about 5mb when using the deco in the summerhouse and it constantly drops WiFi flashing red. Frustratingly, plugging an old pair of standard powerline plugs between the house and summerhouse will give me a 20MB rock solid wired connection but I really need it all on one network. I can't really run an Ethernet cable to the summer house due to logistics. If I were to plug a deco onto the powerline plug I don't think it would join the same network?

How can I best extend the network to the garden building? I'm not beyond buying additional nodes or an entirely new mesh if the p9 isn't up to it.

Am I chasing a unicorn expecting a mesh experience without wires covering my house and summerhouse? Feel like I must be missing something!

If your powerline adapters are compatible with Deco Ethernet backhaul, you can use them to link Deco in the summerhouse to Deco in the house and that will bring Deco mesh with powerline adapters speeds to the summerhouse.

You can use any Deco for that, for example Deco M5.

If your powerline adapters are from TP-Link brand, they are almost 100% guaranteed to be compatible.

You can also test that with P9, taking into consideration that for P9 Ethernet backhaul takes preference over powerline/WiFi. That will not be an elegant setup, but if it works - problem solved.

So, this is how you need to set everything:

1. In the house, connect powerline adapter to Main or Satellite Deco with Ethernet cable;

2. Place second powerline adapter in summerhouse and verify it has powerline link and that link is of acceptable speed and stability;

3. In the summerhouse, connect P9 with Ethernet cable to powerline adapter;

4. Power on P9. If it can use powerline adapters, it should report Ethernet backhaul in Deco app. If it still shows powerline/wifi backhaul or won't connect at all - that most likely means, your powerline adapters are not compatible with Deco backhaul.

If above setup failed, I would suggest getting compatible powerline adapters, such as TL-PA7017P KIT or TL-PA7017 KIT, and non-powerline Deco unit such as M5, M4 or E4.

  @Alexandre.

That is unbelievably helpful, thank you so much. Really appreciate the options too, a few things to try here! Will get on to that as soon as I'm home.
