This Article Applied to:

Archer BE800 V1

Archer BE900 V1

Phenomenon Description:

We have been alerted to an issue where some GPON ONUs or sticks are only able to negotiate at 1Gbps when connected to the 10Gbps SFP+ Combo port of our Archer BE800/BE900 devices, despite potentially having a 2Gbps service plan with their ISP.

User feedback can be found in these community threads:

BE800 SFP 2.5G Mode

GE800 Router Only Recognizing 2.5G GPON as 1000Mbps Full Duplex

We understand the importance of achieving the full potential of your network and are committed to providing a seamless experience. To assist you in resolving this issue, please follow these troubleshooting steps.

Troubleshooting Suggestions:

1. Check Compatibility

Please ensure that your GPON ONU device is compatible with 10G WAN ports. It's suggested to refer to the manufacturer's specifications for details.

*We have found that certain 2.5Gpbs GPON modules, such as ODI DFP-34X-2C2, HUAWEI MA5671A, and Nokia G-010SA, work well with our routers. If you're using one of these modules, you should be fine with the connectivity as well as potential speed. However, it's always best to check the specifications before purchasing.

2. Firmware Update

Make sure your BE800/BE900 router is running the latest firmware for optimal performance and compatibility. Visit our website for the latest updates and installation instructions.

3. Restart the GPON Module

To refresh the connection, carefully remove the GPON module from the SFP+ Combo port on your BE800/BE900 device. Then, gently insert it back, ensuring that it clicks into place securely to ensure a proper connection. This simple step can often resolve intermittent connectivity issues.

Workaround:

If the GPON ONU stick still negotiates at 1Gbps rather than the expected 2.5Gbps, we recommend exploring the solutions discussed in the GitHub forum. Additionally, we're offering beta firmware for the Archer BE800/BE900 V1 that allows you to modify the port settings.

Archer BE800_V1_1.0.6 (Beta firmware)

Archer BE900_V1_1.1.3 (Beta firmware)

Archer GE800_V1_1.1.5 (Beta firmware)

Note: Please be sure you have read the Terms and Conditions for TP-Link Beta Firmware before proceeding.

After updating, please refer to the steps shared by community member d5aqoep in the following link. These instructions will guide you through modifying the port settings to potentially resolve the negotiation issue:

  @Kevin_Z Hi Kevin,
i don't think any of us with the newer versions of the firmware with the reboot and wifi drops want to go back to the old versions.

is there a newer version of the firmware that has both 2.5gbps fix as well as keep stability of the router and wifi?

if you want to get it running on 1.1.6 beta this config has worked for me

from telnet run

ip link set eth1 down

ssdk_sh port interfacemode set 6 sgmii_plus

ssdk_sh port interfacemode apply 6

ethtool -s eth1 speed 2500 duplex full autoneg off

ip link set eth1 up

Is there an update on this?

I am discussing with AIS my ISP on using a GPON directly into the BE800 instead of running through a Huawei router that they use as their home fiber termination.

They are open to working with me on it but i cant find any reference on which fibre GPONs if any are known to work work with the BE800.   Does TPlink support an inhouse  SFP+ GPON ?

Is GPON reliable on the BE800?

General comment.

I have two BE800's with a 10 Gbs wired backhaul in a Main - AP configuration. I tried mesh and it didnt work well for me because i need configuration options on the AP node that i cant do in the Mesh and the Mesh was flakey. The AP BE800 is  wired because at more than 3 metres the WiFi back haul was down to less than 1Gbs.

I've now wired in my desktop PC into the AP because even though  with Win11 24H2  (at less than 1 Metre) I can now see  a  consistent 5764/5764 Gbs WiFi 7 connection into the BE800, it file transfers consistently   at only 2/3 of the Wired 2500Gbs connection.  For general use around the apartment WiFi 6 is faster than WiFi 6E on my Samsung phone  unless I sit on top of the Router.

Everything on the BE800 seems to have a maybe in the future solution in beta firmware. It would be quite nice in a premium  12 month old product to see some fully supported release quality features and stability.   It was hinted in this forum that a new production release of firmware would come mid January  2025 - we're now first week of February.  I have a nagging fear everying will get fixed in V2 hardware which seems to be standard practise in the Router business, meaning V1 will  get abandoned.

I'm a bit confused. You mentioned that one BE800 works as the main router and the other works at AP Mode, but you mentioned WiFi backhaul later. Could you please verify how they connected? Do you enable EasyMesh? If you're enabling EasyMesh, I assume they are connected via Ethernet/wired backhaul. Test with another Cat6 cable and ensure it's connected securely.

Are they both running the latest 1.1.6 official firmware? If not, please update and install the latest firmware and then check the connection again.

Regarding the file transfer speed concern, when transferring a file, how are the devices (computer or phone) connected to the network? The speed for transferring files between two devices when connecting to the same router via WiFi can sometimes be affected by several factors, such as Wi-Fi interferences, network congestion, and maybe distance. You might consider reducing network usage by disconnecting all the other devices during the file transfer to check if that would improve the speed.

  @Kevin_Z

My ISP AIS Thailand wont support a BE800 with a PON at the current time. My contract has 10 months to run so i'll look at the alternative ISPs in Thailand and think about swapping then.  It would be nice if TP-link in Thailand would talk to the ISPs. The only WiFi 7 solution currently generally available  in Thailand is TP-Link. The ISP bundled high end  offer is a TP Link BE85 set  which has an SFP port. Yet they wire the Fibre through a cheap Huawei Router !

---------------------------------------------------

Firmware in both BE800 is  1.1.99 Build 20241126 rel.18304(4153)

I was using that because i read it might solve WiFi mesh problems.

Summary config now is:-

ISP Fibre----1Gb/500Gb----HG8245H------1GbE------BE800 Main--------10GbE----------BE800AP

I live in a 60 square meter rented apartment. The 1Gbs fibre connection is in the living room with BE800 Main wired through a HG8245H

BE800 Main  has a wired TV, wired Android streaming box (Both 1GbE),  and via WiFi a second TV in the main bedroom (WiFi5),  Pico 4U VR head set  (WiFi 7), two Samsung S24U phones (WiFi 6E) a Dell WiFi 6 /2.5 GbE  laptop  and a few WiFi 2.4  IOT devices .

The BE800 AP is in the spare bedroom office. It has a wired desktop (2.5Gbe,BE200 WiFi7  I914th gen,  4900 ) , wired Qnap NAS (2x 1G LACP)  and a printer  (2.4 Wifi).

Originally I had set to WiFi backhaul. The two BE800 are only about 4M apart but with a modern condo wall between. The drop off on WiFi 7 and even 6E is dramatic and killed the VR headset streaming from the Desktop.

So i drilled through the wall and switched to a 10G wired back haul.  Wired Port to Port between the main BE800 and BE800 AP  I can get a full 2.36Gbs. Im still better to have both the Samsungs set to WiFi 6 not 6E to get fast coverage across the apartment.

The observed copy problem is on the QNAP  Nas -- BE800(AP) -- Desktop  PC

I get fairly consistent 226 Mbs copy speed  wired. It fluctuates between 50Mbs and 200Mbs on Wifi 7 with the WiFi Antenna 1M from the BE800. It looks as though its buffering or flow controlling somewhere. That might be a combination of WiFi 7 and LACP on the BE800.    I'll try and run some tests  with the wired Dell laptop replacing the Qnap.

@StFual

Thank you very much for the very detailed information. We appreciate it!yes

I now have a clear understanding of the usage and situation. While your suspicion about the buffering or flow control may be valid, I cannot confirm it at this moment. We will investigate further and hope you can assist with additional tests in your network.

When it's convenient, please help test with the below:

1. Disconnect one of the Ethernet cables on the wired Qnap NAS (2x 1G LACP), only leave one signal connection.

2. Fix the Speed on the wired desktop (2.5Gbe,BE200 WiFi7  I914th gen,  4900 ) to 1Gbps. Steps to do that: Open the Networking adapters - right-click the network adapter and select Properties - click the Advanced tab - scroll down to Speed & Duplex. By default, it is set to Auto-Negotiate. Select 1000Mbps instead. Then click OK and restart the computer.

After the above two steps, please test the file transfer again to check if the speed will be improved.

Waiting for your test results.
