Model: TL-WPA4220 KIT

Firmware Version:

Hey all.

Bought this today and I followed the quick start. I couldn't find the TP link extender on the WiFi, only my router. So I tried the pairing, and that seemed to work (ethernet from router to adapter, with extender paired in the same room).

So I unplugged the extender and then took it upstairs. All lights on apart from the ethernet as we're just using it wirelessly in the upstairs room. I tried doing a speed test but didn't notice any difference. But then it got me thinking, the phone where I did the test is on my home network. So my questions are:

1. Why didn't the TP link show on the WiFi as a separate thing?

2. How do I know if the power line is working and it's carrying that signal up the stairs?

3. How do I know if it's not just boosting the current signal and poorly at that? So is that what pairing does, just boosts or pairs through the power line using the same WiFi option and login for my router as opposed to separate?

4. What does pairing both adapters together do? Does this create a separate network too?

Also I downloaded the Tp link app and when I click on the adapter plug data rate section,  it shows a data rate travelling to it and nothing to the extender, but when I click on the extender data rate section it shows data travelling to it but nothing to the adapter. Mighty confusing.

So I did a reset on the extender and tried to pair it with the adapter however the instructions said the power will be blinking on the extender, but it was actually the WiFi blinking instead. Any ideas?

New to all this, don't know if you can tell haha.

Thanks!

Hi,

The extender will have a separate WIFI name by default, you can check the label at the back of this unit, the default WIFI name and password will be printed on it.

If it is the same as the main router, please check if you did WIFI Clone.

The LED lights will show whether they are transmitting data. After you pair them, the powerline light will be on.

You can use powerline devices to extend the internet to the dead zones in your home. And you can also test the speed you get from the device.

@Sunshine thanks I was being a bit silly but managed to sort it. Once question I have is that the extender, currently not paired, shows better signal than the WiFi hub when I'm upstairs. So if I unify them, how does that work, does it automatically switch to the stronger signal despite being under one WiFi option (router, password etc). Thanks.

Hi,

Do you mean you will add two extenders with WIFI function into the PLC network?

The two units will broadcast two different WIFI even if you set up same SSID and password for them.

In this case, your backend device may change the connected WIFI according to the strength of the WIFI signal, just as it switches between other different WIFIs.
