Hello,

I would lik to check on the best way to set up a Deco X20 and Deco X50-Outdoor.

I am operating 5 villa units that is side by side (Something like a terrace house). I have my wifi modem in the last unit. I have actually bought a number of deco x20 to supply internet to the other 4 units. Can I check what is the best way to do that other that signing up for more lines?

My current set up is this, the modem is located on level 2 of the house, as for the other 4 units, the deco x20 is set up on alternate level. However, I noticed that instead of connecting to the nearest node, it is always trying to connect to the main deco which causes the signal to be weak.

I have just bought a deco X50 outdoor and was thinking if I were to place a deco X50-outdoor in the middle of the 5 units outdoor to this mesh system, will it improve the signal strength?

I'm not too familiar with AP mode or what not as I am very green in this area of focus.

With Deco mesh, Satellite Deco prefers connection to Main Deco, even if signal is weak. Newer Deco models with updated firmware have an option to configure how Satellite Deco connect, but not all of them.

If you can make screenshot of Update Deco page in your Deco app and share it here, it'll help me figure if your Decos have or can have that feature. I'll put an example of that page at the bottom of this post.

Generally speaking, the best solution (if feasible) would be to lay Ethernet cable(s) and connect all Deco with Ethernet cables in daisy chain more, such as:

When you are saying "signing up for more lines," what do you mean? If you explain, that may help me to figure if other solutions are available for you.

  @Alexandre.

Hello Alexandre,

Thank you for sharing.

What I meant by having more lines, I meant that signing up for more internet connection with the internet provider. Afterall, this is a 5 villa units, it should have at least 1 internet connection per unit. But because of the high cost involved, I am actually trying to avoid that and use a mesh system instead.

I understand that the speed will reduce as long as the signal is weak or is far away from the modem. Can i check and understand that with more deco units, does it improves the speed? If no, then wouldnt this mesh acts more like a repeater? (Apologies, I am not familiar with this)

I have recently just bought a X50 outdoor deco (waiting for it to be delivered). I hope that with a X50 outdoor deco, it will improve the coverage and signal strength.

What I hope to achieve:

Modem -- Main Deco --> Deco 1 --> Deco 2 --> Deco 3

With a X50 Outdoor, I am hoping for it:

Modem -- Main Deco --> X50 outdoor -- All decos to be connected to X50 outdoor.

I would recommend updating firmware through Deco app.

According to TP-Link documentation, firmware 1.1.8 support Connection Preference feature, which allows to configure how Satellite Deco connect to each other. It is documented here: How to select a preferred signal source on the Deco App

See if you have that feature in Deco app after you updated firmware.

This feature is only available when all Deco units in Deco mesh support it. Until you add Deco X50-Outdoor to your Deco mesh it would not be possible to tell if your X50-Outdoor does support it. Most likely it will.

If it does, after adding Deco X50-Outdoor to your Deco mesh you can still have that feature in Deco app and can use it to connect Deco units the way you want:

Modem -- Main Deco --> X50 outdoor -- All decos to be connected to X50 outdoor.

Also, check this FAQ for more detailed discussion of Connection Preference feature: Connection Preference: Customize Your Preferred Signal Source
