Model: Deco M4
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.5.4 Build 20220113 Rel.38349

Three floor setup. Each floor has its own deco. Internet antenna is connected to the top floor deco. After I set up the lowest deco, it connected to the top floor (main) deco. Is it possible to force the lowest deco to connect to the middle deco for better signal?

Thanks for any input.

Hi,

At present, only Deco M4 V4 has the firmware that adds the function to choose connection preference. Deco M4(V4) 1.1.0Deco M4(V4) 1.1.0.

Otherwise, the only workaround is to connect directly via Ethernet cable.

Actually, there is also firmware for M4 V2: Deco M4/S4_V2 Support Connection Preference

It is not always optimal to have a better signal on the lowest Deco.

In a chain connection, all traffic from the lowest Deco will have to travel an additional time via the wifi network.

Thanks a lot for the recommended firmware. I will dive into that shortly and hopefully, it'll help.

Your point is valid. But in current setup, the lowest deco has over 70% worse download speed, so whatever alternative is worth trying. Plus i assume chain connection does not result in significantly higher ping or speed decrease.

Each hop cuts WiFi speed by half. From the other hand, chain connection should bring more stable WiFi.

If your furthest Satellite Deco routinely reports Weak signal to Main Deco, and you can check that in Deco app under Satellite Deco info page, then this is a good reason to try chain connection even for the price of lower WiFi speeds.

Here is where to check signal quality for Satellite Deco in Deco app, in this example signal is Fair:

Wow. Half is a lot. But that sounds about right, because it was reporting "weak" and I got around 75%.
