Model: Deco P9
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.1.5 Build 20231229 Rel. 36756

I have a Deco network set up according to the image:

Every day, at random times, my network becomes unavailable.

The first symptoms are both Host and Smartphone not able to access the internet.

Sometimes, the internet access is restored without intervention. Other times, I have to turn the main Deco off and on.

During the issue, if I try to ping the Main Deco from the Host (cabled to a P9 satellite, which is cabled to the Main P9), I get:

$ ping 192.168.68.1
PING 192.168.68.1 (192.168.68.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.68.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=216 ms

64 bytes from 192.168.68.1: icmp_seq=30 ttl=64 time=21.6 ms

Notice many pings are lost.

Tests I did so far:

- Switch the Deco P9 Main by the Deco P9 Satellite. Same issue.

- Disabled Beamforming on my Deco Wi-Fi. Same issue.

- Disabled Fast Roaming on my Deco Wi-Fi. Same issue.

- Connect my Host directly to an ethernet LAN port in the ISP Router: Internet works fine there.

This makes me think there's an issue on both Deco P9 I have.

In the main Deco P9 logs, at around "Tue Apr  9 13:26" , we can notice:

Tue Apr  9 13:26:06 2024 user.err syslog: Error: ssh_connect: Timeout connecting to 192.168.68.108
Tue Apr  9 13:26:06 2024 user.err syslog: Error: connect
Tue Apr  9 13:26:06 2024 user.err syslog: Error: ssh_connect: Timeout connecting to 192.168.68.105
Tue Apr  9 13:26:06 2024 user.err syslog: Error: connect

Which corresponds to the IP addresses of the two Deco satellites I have, meaning there was indeed some communication error to/from the Main deco.

Please advise.

  @apahim

Hi, is there any chance that you could set Deco into Access Point mode under Deco APP>More>Advanced> Operation Mode?

Deco will still have Mesh and work with the same topology.

or the following network layout also works in AP mode and Deco X50-POE can be set as main Deco as well.

The main difference might be,

  • There will be only one IP range and all IP addresses are assigned by the wired ISP router.
  • Parental control and some advanced features(like NAT forwarding, address reservation, etc.) are no longer supported in AP mode.

Wait for your reply and best regards.

Hi  @David-TP ,

Yes, in fact I did it yesterday, as I'm under the assumption the issue is the main Deco P9 not being able to take on the load as a router.

Right now, my topology looks like this:

Which is essentially what you suggested, I'm just using the ports on my ISP router to link the Decos with no bottleneck untill the ISP router.

Anyway, so far this is working fine, no issues, as we would expect. But as you said, there are quite some features I'm giving up, and we are not really finding the issue, just working around it.

I also opened a ticket to the Tp-Link support team, let's see what they have to say. For now, I will keep my network in bridge mode. I will report back here if/when I have news.

Thank you!

Update:

TP-Link support contacted me, asking to set my network back to "Operation Mode: Wi-Fi Router", and  use the X50-PoE as the Main unit.

I rejected the request because my X50-PoE is mounted on a remote wall and bringing it to work as the Main unit will leave an entire area without Wi-Fi.

No option was offered to actually fix the issue in the Deco P9 yet, it seems like I should keep trying different topologies until it works.

So far, my perception is that the Deco P9 is limited in terms of the load it can take as a router. If that turns out to be the case, I will have to return my P9s and replace them by something more capable.
