Request for Enhanced Security Features in Upcoming Firmware Update for Deco Devices

I am writing to discuss a crucial aspect of network security related to IoT (Internet of Things) devices within the Deco network ecosystem. Currently, Deco devices lack the capability to hide the WiFi SSID specifically designated for IoT devices in the separated IoT Wi-Fi options, as well as the inability to configure VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) settings for these devices. This limitation poses a significant security concern.

The primary issue at hand is the increased vulnerability to network security threats. IoT devices, by their nature, are often less secure than standard computing devices. The visibility of a separate IoT WiFi SSID without the added layer of VLAN segregation makes these devices more susceptible to being hijacked or hacked. This is a concerning scenario, given the potentially sensitive nature of the data handled by these devices and their growing prevalence in both home and professional environments.

Although separating the WiFi name for IoT devices offers a basic level of organization, it does little to fortify the network against malicious activities. The visibility of the IoT SSID can serve as a beacon for potential attackers, making it easier for them to target these devices specifically.

In light of these concerns, I strongly urge the Deco engineering team to consider the following feature enhancements in the upcoming firmware updates:

  1. Ability to Hide IoT WiFi SSID: This feature would allow users to make the IoT network invisible to unauthorized users, significantly reducing the risk of targeted attacks on these devices.

  2. VLAN Configuration for IoT Devices: Implementing VLAN capabilities for IoT devices would provide an additional layer of security. It would enable network administrators to segregate IoT traffic from the main network, thereby limiting the potential impact of any breach on IoT devices.

These enhancements would not only bolster the security of IoT devices but also provide users with greater control and peace of mind regarding their network's integrity.

I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to the potential implementation of these features in future Deco device firmware updates.

Vlan support please. You have a separate network - please go all the way and allow the router to separate it on the network level too.

I stopped recommending "Deco" to friends and family because they don't have vlan support, I switched to Huawei.

@doremo The user should be able to set VLAN IDs on all WIFI networks, why TPLINK calls these units Routers. What is that IOT network for, if you see all other secure devices from it ?

+1 for this. I trust IoT devices as far as I can chuck my mother in law. and she's really fat. Really, really fat.
