Extender connecting to weaker ssid in a group of similar ssids

Model: RE315
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.30

Two Routers. Each has 2 ssids of similar name. Total of 4 ssids of similar name but obviously different mac addresses/bssid. One router is farther away.

While setup of extender, i chose the closest routers ssid as it was shown 1st and highest range bars. But after setup, the Extender connects to ssid of the farthest router. And sometimes cycles through ssids. Seldom does i get connected to nearest one. And i get weaker speeds as result. Extender doesn't seem to lock on whatever it was told to connect during quick setup. Even selecting through wirless tab, it reverts back to the farthest routers ssid.

And No. I won't disable multiple ssid/change names of ssid, because i have other benefits that way. That's not the right solution. Why doesn't Extender stay connected to specific bssid? It seems like when there's multiple ssid of same name extender gets confused.

  @Rozin8

Hi, Thank you very much for the feedback.

May I know the model number of the two routers? Do you use these two routers to create a Mesh system?

During the configuration of the range extender, it isn't bound to a unique MAC address. I think it is quite like a mobile phone and it would switch to another WiFi as long as it knows the Wi-Fi SSID and password.

If the two routers are not a mesh system and use different IP ranges, you could consider setting a static IP address on the RE315 to see whether it helped.

Best regards.

  @Rozin8

Hi,

In case it's still possible you could consider a router model that also supports "Range Extender" mode beside the router mode. According to the emulators on the product website there are a few AC1200 models from TP-Link that have the "Lock to AP" feature.

  @David-TP tplink eap110 and tenda O3 v3.0.

These are not mesh compatible.

Ip address configuration doesn't cause this issue. I have changed to static IP, still problem occurs.

  @woozle Now please don't suggest to buy another hardware as a solution, that's lame. If this archer router has such a feature, implement it into extenders too. It shouldn't be such a big task for the firmware writing team. RE315 is a newer extender introduced in 2021. It deserves more features and firmware updates

  @Rozin8 I'll post a feature request mentioning lock to AP for extenders. Actually this feature is a must have for Extenders and not routers. Routers 90% of the time uses wired lan as host network source and you tplink guys implemented lock to ap in a router first (for its Extender mode which is used rarely), instead of extenders.indecision

It should've been implemented in extenders because these devices are used wirelessly end to end. So while connecting to host network wirelessly it must have lock on ap (based on mac address).

  @David-TP I found this. https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/stories/detail/514

I hope the same for RE315
