Sometimes you may question why a newer and more advanced model begins with a seemingly lower firmware version, such as 1.1.0, while older models have already reached 1.6.0. Do these firmware version numbers hold any significant meaning? Moreover, is it possible to revert the current firmware back to its original version?  In this article, we will provide an explanation of the common rules regarding Deco firmware versions.

Begin with a brief overview of the current firmware platforms and the newly added software features they offer:

First and Foremost!

These are common rules that apply to most Deco and it's important to note that there are exceptions as well. We will provide examples of these exceptions at the end of the articles.  Our ultimate goal is to assist users in gaining a clear understanding of the current firmware versions on their Deco. We strive to avoid any misunderstandings that could lead to inappropriate purchases.  Therefore, we kindly encourage you to confirm with us and double-check the release notes if you have any uncertainties regarding specific firmware versions.

This firmware sheet will help us answer the questions at the very beginning:

Why do Newer models have a seemingly lower firmware?

We are continually expanding the Deco Whole Mesh family. At first, it would be Deco M5, M9 plus, etc. with a HomeCare security system. The firmware started from 1.3.x to 1.7.x now. Later with the addition of Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 models and the new HomeShield service, a new version series starts from 1.0.x to 1.3.x now. A lower 1.0.x or 1.1.x doesn’t represent fewer features and it is mainly used to highlight the difference.

Does my firmware version hold any significant meaning?

By referring to the current version numbers, you can also identify the software features that should be available on your router. If your Deco M4_v4 is on 1.1.0/1.1.1, you may understand it should support the Signal Source Selection/Connection Preference and Reboot Schedule.

Can I downgrade the firmware?

Users usually could downgrade the firmware directly via web UI if the current and original versions are in the same Firmware Platforms, like from 1.5.8 to 1.5.6. However, downgrading crossing different firmware platforms often needs Firmware Recovery. A higher firmware platform often brings exciting new features and it is always not the first option to downgrade back to a lower platform. So if there are any issues after updating the firmware, we would highly appreciate it if you could start a new topic and we will promptly address your concerns.

Helpful article, thanks, but that is not enough. Here is an example:

TP-Link US currently lists Deco X10 here: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/download/deco-x10/

There is no firmware offered, meaning X10 comes with its original firmware and there have been no firmware updates yet. Based on that link which only offers generic user guide and on article, how one could figure which firmware platform Deco X10 belongs to, and features available for X10, before buying it?

  @Alexandre.

Hi, Thank you very much for pointing it out.

The Deco X10 comes equipped with the 1.6.0 firmware platform features.

It is a bit like the Deco WiFi 7 series, like the Deco BE95/85. They came equipped with the 1.7.0 &1.8.0 firmware platform features. So far, there hasn't been a pattern for the newly released models. Most of them need to be checked case by case.

Best regards.

PS(May not be related to the original question):

1.Most of the multi-gateway models, like Deco X20/50/73-DSL, Deco X20/50-4G, and Deco X50-5G don't apply to the common rules.

2. The Powerline models, like Deco PX50/Deco P9 don't apply to the common rules either.

Thanks for multi-gateway clarification. How about "Pro" models, will they follow same firmware platform as same but not Pro models. Examples: XE75 and XE75 Pro, X55 and X55 Pro.

  @Alexandre.

Hi, For the "Pro" models, compared with the original model, the main difference would be an upgrade of the Ethernet ports, like from 1G to 2.5G.

It came also equipped with the latest firmware platform features(it was 1.5.0 at that time). The good thing about "Pro" models is that their firmware upgrade cycle would soon catch the steps of original models.

And they did follow the platform rules here.

Best regards.

Hi, Deco X80(non-5G model) also applies to this rule, and the latest firmware of Deco X80_V1_1.2.0 has supported the features on Deco 1.7.0/1.8.0 firmware platforms.

Thank you very much and best regards.

Hi, this post actually doesn't ask users to update their Deco to a certain firmware platform. And there hasn't been a 1.9.0/1.3.0 firmware for Deco X80 either.

It mainly provides a reference sheet of what software features you should have based on your current firmware version and what new features you can expect with future Deco firmware upgrades.

I think I might have misunderstood what you said at the very beginning.

If you are looking for the firmware of Deco X80, You can view its support link here:

Best regards.

  @David-TP are the features of each firmware platform cumulative? i.e. if we have a device which now has firmware available on the 1.12.0 firmware platform, does it have all the features listed under firmware platform 1.5.0 through to 1.11.0?
