Model: TL-WPA8631P
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version: 4.0.1 Build 20230509 Rel.37153

This is about firmware compatibility.

I purchased a TL-WPA8631P KIT(EU)_V4 and an additional TL-WPA8631P(EU)_V4

Both units' type sticker mention TL-WPA8631P V4 - I undestand that "KIT" really only means that it comes with the TL-PA8010P V4 wired unit to be connected to the router.

There are two different download sites; one for TL-WPA8631P KIT(EU)_V4 and a separate one for TL-WPA8631P(EU)_V4.

Both sites offer "TL-WPA8631P KIT(EU)_V4_4.0.2 Build 20230817" as the latest Firmware dated 29.08.2023.

My question:

Is this firmware "TL-WPA8631P KIT(EU)_V4_4.0.2 Build 20230817" safe to install in TL-WPA8631P(EU)_V4 units even if the sticker on the back does NOT mention the "KIT" in the device type name??

If so: I suggest to remove the "KIT" from the firmare name on the download site.

Thanks,

Thomas

Ok, now I understand. You are worried that TP-Link might have accidently linked the wrong file to the non-KIT webpage.

Given that the zip files of the previous firmware versions are also identical between the KIT and non-KIT version it is save to assume that the same firmware is used for the TL-WPA8631P KIT(EU) and TL-WPA8631P(EU).

Of course the TL-PA8010P unit that should have come bundled with the TL-WPA8631P KIT uses a different firmware that is not included in the zip file downloaded from the webpage of TL-WPA8631P KIT.

Hi,

The hyperlink assigned to the [Download] button on the "KIT" page is

https://static.tp-link.com/upload/firmware/2023/202308/20230829/TL-WPA8631P(EU)_V4_230817.zip

and the hyperlink assigned to the [Download] button on the "non-KIT" page is

https://static.tp-link.com/upload/firmware/2023/202308/20230829/TL-WPA8631P(EU)_V4_230817.zip

So, you are downloading exactly the same file in both cases.

  @woozle Ho Woozle.

Yes, I am aware that it is the same file. the confusion is that it says for "TL-WPA8631P KIT(EU)" even on the download page for the "non KIT" version.

So, does it only apply to units that actually mention "KIT" on their name plate sticker on the back, or to any TL-WPA8631P V4 for Europe (both KIT and non KIT)?

@woozle Spot on and thanks for your help. Encouraging enough to just go for it.

Perhaps TP-Link should simply not provide a separate page for the "KIT" and remove the "KIT" from the firmware name as it is not an actual "version" but simply a package of two components which each have their own support page.

And: yes, I well understand that the wired "base unit" TL-PA8010P requires different firmware (it has its own page for that).

Best,

Thomas
