Model: Archer T9UH
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version:

I currently use the Archer T9UH V2 on my Windows 10 home desktop. I've been using it for about a year now.

I have two issues. The first issue relates to an invisible box, and the second issue is related to sporadic internet disconnects.

1. Invisible Box

This is an issue I've been experiencing for several months. An invisible inaccessible box (the size of a small credit card) appears somewhere randomly on my desktop screen which is particularly evident and frustrating when I am playing computer games as that box will effectively create a dead spot/zone on my screen. Only recently, I used a Process Explorer to identify what process was causing this and it turns out it was due to a process called: " TP-Link Wireless Adapter WPS Tool". Once I end this task, the box disappears and it is fine for the duration of my computer being on. Before I discovered this workaround, the only way to remove the box was to restart my computer.

2. Internet Disconnects

This issue is fairly frequent in that every other day, the internet connectivity will suddenly drop and my desktop device can no longer detect the WiFi adapter. I try resetting my USB port (that the adapter is connected to) and try replugging it several times. No success. The only workaround, similar to above, is to restart my computer.

Are these known issues? If so, is there a permanent fix that can or will be deployed? Perhaps a firmware update or a bug fix? Please address each separately.

Hi,

The first issue can be solved rather easily.
- Uninstall the "TP-Link Wireless Adapter WPS Tool" via the Apps & features menu (the regular way to uninstall programs in Windows)
- Uninstall the "TP-Link ... driver" as well, in case it wasn't uninstalled automatically with the previous step
- Download the "Chipset Driver" from the first post of this thread https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/509006 and install it

If you are lucky, then this might also improve on the second issue.

But my personal experience with AC1200 and AX1800 USB wireless adapters based on Realtek 8812 and 8832/52 chips is that, while they work really fine on computers based on Intel hardware, they are not good friends with AMD USB controllers.
Some people found some improvement by plugging the USB wireless adapter into another USB 3.x port. On motherboards for Ryzen CPUs some of the USB ports are wired to the USB controller built into the Ryzen CPU and some USB ports are wired to the USB controller of the motherboard chipset (the B550 in your case). For some reason there are slight differences between the two controllers, even though they are both "AMD".
If the user manual MSI provides is very detailed it may tell you how the motherboard's USB ports are internally connected.

If maximum speed is not your main goal, then plug the Archer T9UH into an USB 2.0 port. This method also seems to have solved these problems for a lot of people.

Another option would be this. I have a Ryzen 5 2600 with B450 chipset and I solved my problems by adding a USB 3.x controller with another chipset via a PCIe add-on card. Intel doesn't make such chips for add-on cards, but the one I have has got a chip from VIA Labs, which has worked fine for me so far.

@woozle Thanks Woozle. This is very detailed.

Silly question as I've not used a 'chipset driver' before. Are there any risks or downsides of using a chipset driver relative to using an "official driver"? I've read the link you've provided although it's only given a high level overview. I'm inclined to download it but just wanted to understand it a bit more before doing so.

Secondly, to your point re AMD. I have read various forums online that adapters from tp-link don't play nicely with AMD. There seems to be some compatibility issues although inconclusive. I will check if I have an alternative USB3.0 port. I currently have the adapter plugged into a USB3.0 port (on the top part of my tower). I'm not sure where the other USB3.0 port would be. I'm obviously a novice here so any ideas where it might be hiding? :D

Technically there is no difference between the "official drivers" and the chipset vendor drivers other than that TP-Link may have included their name and logo in the driver installer and also added that "WPS Tool".

In theory, the "official" driver offered by the manufacturer of the product has been tested twice, first by the chipset maker (in this case Realtek) and then again by the manufacturer of the final product (in this case TP-Link).

However, this also means that due to the efforts and resources (= money) required for the testing the manufacturer will not re-test and offer every new driver the chipset maker releases.

So, in the end you will often have the choice between an older, but double-tested driver from the product manufacturer or a newer driver directly from the chipset maker, which has not been tested with the final product, but may still have less bugs and better performance.

And by the way, this is nothing new. If we take graphics cards for example. I think it has been common practice for at least 15 years or so that users download the newest drivers directly from nVidia or AMD/ATI instead of the (sometimes age-old) drivers from the manufacturers of the graphics cards.

Tower casings usually have a couple of USB ports on the front plate, but the majority of USB ports are located on the rear side, near to where the cable for the monitor is connected. USB ports with a black contact bar ("tongue") are usually USB 2.0, while other colors indicate some variant of USB 3.x.

@woozle Makes sense, thanks. I'm running into an error despite it supporting Windows 10:

Make sure you uncompress the contents of the file "RTLWlanU_WindowsDriver_1030.44.0531.2021_Drv_3.00.0036.L(49547).zip" into a new empty folder before you run Setup.exe.
