Model: Deco M9 Plus
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version:

Greetings all,

I should have posted this question before buying the 3-pack of the Deco M9 Plus... but the Amazon Prime deal was one of my motivations. :)

I was tasked with a project to find an inexpensive way to set up cameras in each of our disposal rooms to monitor condo violators. Going the commercial option (wiring and pro-cameras) was beyond our budget, so I am thinking of setting up inexpensive Wyze cameras and connecting them to WiFi by extending our existing common WiFi reach to the basement with the Deco M9 Plus.

Has anyone done something similar? I have heard that the Deco M9 works well through reinforced concrete. I have a 3-pack and I think the total distance from our common room to the first disposal room (straight-line) is less than 800 ft. The main obstacle is going from the first floor to the basement... between the first floor and the basement, very little regular WiFi or cell phone gets through.

How many Deco M9 Plus units can be networked together before one notices significant latency?

Also, is it possible to purchase a single M9 Plus? It seems that they are sold in a minimum of 2-packs.

Thank you.

Hi,
The Deco M9 Plus is a regular Wi-Fi router, it is also easily affected by network interferences, distance, etc. It's almost impossible for the satellite deco to connect to the main deco via Wi-Fi if they are away from each other around 800ft, and have obstacles in between.

You can set up the network diagram as the Internet--main deco--satellite deco 1--satellite deco 2 for a try if you can connect Deco units via ethernet cable, and the ethernet cable between the Deco units is suggested no more than 100 meters.

Generally, if a Deco model is sold individually, you can see 1-PACK on the Deco model's Overview page on the official website, such as the Deco M5 in the CA website.

Best Regards

Thanks for your response, Solla-topee.

But I'm confused by your response.

The advertisement for the package I purchased states, "Whole Home Coverage: Deco M9 Plus (3-Pack) uses a system of units to achieve seamless whole-home WiFi coverage up to 6,500 sq. ft. — eliminate weak signal areas once and for all"

>try if you can connect Deco units via ethernet cable, and the ethernet cable between the Deco units is suggested no more than 100 meters.

Why would I connect them together via ethernet? Isn't the point of these devices to connect them via WiFi?

My plan was to connect it as follows:
I took the time to measure the actual distances:

My router (Archer AX50) -> Deco M9 Plus (1 of 3) -> Distance (~25 m) Deco M9 Plus (2 of 3) -> Distance (~ 9 m through concrete floor) Deco M9 Plus (3 of 3) -> Distance (~45 m straight line) Deco M9 Plus (add-on) + WiFi camera -> Distance (~25 m) WiFi camera 2

My question remains, will the Deco M9 Plus extend my WiFi to at least the first WiFi camera, and how many Deco M9s can I use to extend my WiFi reach even further?

Thank you,

Shawn

Hi Shawn,
The Wi-Fi coverage in the package of the Deco M9 Plus(3-Pack) means that they can provide Wi-Fi to a space with a length and width of about 20X30 meters under normal usage conditions. Please note that the actual wireless coverage is not guaranteed and will vary as a result of 1) environmental factors, including building materials, physical objects, and obstacles, 2) network conditions, including local interference, volume and density of traffic, product location, network complexity, and network overhead, and 3) client limitations, including rated performance, location, connection quality, and client condition.

The wired connection is faster and more stable than Wi-Fi, usually, if two Deco units are far away from each other and hard to establish the Wi-Fi connection, we will suggest using the Ethernet connection, and they still build a mesh network.

For the topology you want to achieve, since you have three Deco M9 Plus, you can set them up and test the connection with the actual Deco units. If the phone/laptop placed in the Deco 4(add-on) location has a weak signal or can't see the Wi-Fi from the Deco network, then adding a new Deco in this location may also have a problem.
And in this situation, connecting Deco 4(add-on) to Deco 3 via an ethernet cable is a solution, or you can consider using the wireless powerline product.

You can refer to the link below to know how many Deco units we suggest adding to a Deco network.
How many Deco units can I add to my Deco mesh network?

Best Regards
