Model: Archer AX72
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.2 Build 20220520 rel.75663(4555)

I bought an AX72 to replace the Sky Q router for my gigabit FTTP connection. It works for the most part, I no longer need the Sky Q router and connect the AX72 directly to the Fibre ONT.

However, I get problems whenever I do any sort of serious downloading that maxes out the speed of my connection. For example I downloaded Fifa 23 from the EA app this morning in about 5 minutes, and after this I was unable to load a number of websites eg bbc, Epic games, however others would work just fine. I rebooted the router and then things returned to normal. So I deleted Fifa 23 and downloaded it again and bang, same thing, websites stopped working.

They resolve in DNS

It affects all machines on the network (wifi and hard wired)

I've tried MAC cloning my current PC, and changing the MAC to be the same on the Sky router

I've tried changing DNS on the router, my PC, in DHCP, it has no effect.

If I put my Sky Q router back in between the ONT and the AX72 this problem does not seem to occur (yet anyway).

Any ideas? I'd rather not leave the Sky Q router in place because the bufferbloat is horrible on it.

@Kevin_Z thanks upon further investigation I think this may be related directly to the EA app itself as there are numerous posts describing the same symptoms on the EA forums (just google ea download breaks internet connection). There are similar reports about the Ubisoft client and I remember this happening using that as well

I wonder what these programs are doing to the network traffic to cause these problems at a router level?

Hi, what do you mean by "maxes out the speed of my connection"? Finish the downloading?

Have you enabled or modified the QoS settings on the AX72? Could it be the downloading exceed the bandwidth? Try disabling it to see if the issue fixed.

Also, check and update the router firmware to the latest version to exclude a firmware issue of a specific version.

@Liverpool20 Hi I mean I'm saturating my gigabit broadband speed during the download (100MBs+) for 6 or 7 minutes, this is extremely rare as most sources won't provide that speed or the files aren't big enough to take that long to download so this issue is intermittent. I've only ever noticed this issue occuring when I've done a large game download, usually from EA or Ubisoft, Steam never reaches 100MB for any length of time.

I don't use QoS and am on the latest firmware (earlier versions of the firmware won't negotiate a connection to Sky FTTP internet so I have to use it).

Its like the router says thats enough data for today and just stops working right. I've no caps or anything configured anywhere.
