Model: Archer AX23
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

I was planning to extend my network to the shed using 50m of Cat5e cable with a pair of Lindy Passive Power over Ethernet adapters for power but the AX23 is not powering up, seemingly because the voltage drops from 11.65v at the stock adapter to 11.5v at the end of the 50m cable but when I put slightly more powerful adapter which delivers 11.9v at 50 meters the AX23 still refuses to power up (all lights on steady green).

The AX23 works at 11.65 on the adapter so I'm struggling to understand such a narrow operating range when the label on the back says 12V.

Anyone have any help with this?

Hi,

How did you make that measurement?

If we assume the AX23's power consumption to be 6 Watts (based on general experience) and the voltage of the power adapter is 11.65 Volts, then according to a PoE calculator on the Internet the AX23 would only receive 8.78 Volts at the end of the 50 m Cat5e cable when using 2 wire pairs (most common).

I think with such a long cable you would require the special type of PoE injector adapters that transform the voltage up to a much higher level and then regulate it down again to the voltage required by the network device that is to be powered via PoE.

@woozle Thanks for the great reply. I have measured the voltage at the end of the cable at 11.5 on the stock adapter and 11.9 on another but I suppose it drops to what you suggest when drawing current, a bit like a garden hose when the taps not fully open? I'm a steam fan, never understood electricity !

Thanks.

P.S. Ive ordered a 50m extension lead with 4 outlets, be able to make tea too :0)

That's probably the best solution. :-)

By the way, I am pretty sure these Lindy Passive PoE adapters would have limited the network connection to 100 Mbps.
