Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.0.0 Build 211123 Rel.62500n

I am stuck in that my TL-WPA7517 KIT is ruining my home network enforcing the 'Smart DHCP' option as per: https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/265692

The suggested fix is to update the firmware - but the firmware does not work.

I am fairly confident I have confirmed that the device is a TP-WPA7517, Hardware revision 2.0 and is the US variety:

I am using the latest firmware from here:
https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/download/tl-wpa7517-kit/

Note: I am in Canada and the firmware is not available on the Canadian download page. Shouldn't be relevant as it is listed as a (US) model but thought I'd mention it.

https://www.tp-link.com/ca/support/download/tl-wpa7517-kit/

The file is:

https://static.tp-link.com/upload/firmware/2022/202208/20220826/TL-WPA7517(US)_V2_220701.zip

I have factory reset the device (multiple times) and tried uploading the (extracted) BIN file using:

1. Laptop via WiFi (Windows 10 22H2) connected to TP-Link_2D0B and TP-Link_2D0B_5G)

  • Firewall and A/V disabled
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Google Chrome

2. Desktop (Windows 11 22H2) via WiFi (connected to TP-Link_2D0B and TP-Link_2D0B_5G) and Ethernet (connected directly to the TL-WPA7517)

  • Firewall and A/V disabled
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Chrome Browser
  • tpPLC (Published Date: 2022-06-27)

3. iPhone (iOS 16.2) via WiFi

  • Safari Browser
  • Chrome Browser

Due to the long file name I also attempted renaming the file from wpa7517v2-up-noboot-75170001-ver1-0-10-P1[20220701-rel65093].bin to upgrade.bin (which also didn't work).

In all instances using the website the firmware upgrade gets to 12% and then fails with:

Failed to upgrade the firmware. Please check the configuration file and try again.

When using the tpPLC utility I get the error:

:( Update failed.

There is nothing in the System Log.

Please help.

Support (TKID230107684) asked me to do the following:

For the Static IP address set up, please try to choose use the following IP address, and set the IP to 192.168.80.199, and the gateway to 192.168.80.254, subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, then save it.

After that, you can check the IP address when the device connect to the wifi of this PLC. If still cannot work, please send a picture of this LAN settings page.

Smart DHCP is hijacking DHCP requests and doing stupid things. My DHCP server and router (192.168.80.254) works perfectly.

1. LAN settings page (192.168.80.199 is in use)

2. Here's my IP configuration showing that the tp-link device is doing stupid things. Specifically trying to act as the DNS server and Default Gateway when it can neither respond to DNS queries nor route traffic.

@David-TP thanks your engineer was able to determine that the firmware download that is on the TP-Link US website is corrupt. The hash did not match the expected values.

For anyone else experiencing this issue consider downloading the EU version of the firmware from here:

https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/tl-wpa7517-kit/#Firmware

The EU version fixed not only the "Smart" DHCP issue but also Internet time on the device finally works. The adapter is finally usable.
