For many of your products I am unable to find any information on 5 GHz channels that can be used.

This are my pre-purchase questions:

1. Which 5 GHz channels are supported by the X20-4G (EU market)? Please provide either channel number ranges or frequency range.

Is it the same for X50-4G?

Motivation: In the X50-4G datasheet there is a footnote stating that 160 MHz band support is region dependent, while there is no such footnote in the X20-4G. From this I suspect that the while the X50-4G to be able to support at least one 160 MHz band is highly likely to support at least (5,17 GHz - 5,35 GHz).

As there is no such footnote in the X20-4G datasheet I suspect that the X20-4G might be limited to (5,17 GHz - 5,25 GHz) only.

The ability to use channels above the channel 48 is a huge technical difference for more congested housing areas (blocks of flats). I really do not understand why such information is not provided for the Deco products.

2. Are there any significant hidden differences between the X20-4G and the X50-4G? I am aware of the fact that X50-4G has a faster CPU and higher consumption as I tried to compare the datasheets. However, some additional significant differences might be hidden - e.g.  there is no information on MCS rates, radio sensitivities, ... in teh Deco datasheets.

Motivation: These days a lot of important technical information is being deleted by the marketing people not to confuse customers, while such information would be very useful for advanced users.

(The compare tool shows the ability for LTE carrier aggregation for the X20-4G and for the X50-4G the carrier aggregation is empty.)

3. The future Deco products (e.g. Deco supporting WiFi 7 like the Deco BE65) indicate support for "TP-Link Mesh Technology" rather than mentioning the "DecoMesh. Do you foresee any compatibility issues between Deco X20/X50 and e.g. Deco BE65 (WiFi 7 Deco product) as for the ability to join the WiFI6 DecoMesh?

Motivation: I have learned that DecoMesh, EasyMesh and OneMesh are three totaly incompatible solutions and now I see "TP-Link Mesh Technology" in the description of BE65 rather than DecoMesh. This indicates that there might be a fourth mesh solution in the development.   Are there any plans to improve the interoperability between various TP-link mesh solutions? Will the TPLink mesh technologies converge at least a little bit?

Thank You in advance,

Petr

@PetrF FYI, there are 4 bands for 5 Ghz frequency:

  • Band 1 (Channels 36-48)
  • Band 2 (52-64)
  • Band 3 (100-144)
  • Band 4 (149-165)

1. Channel support depends on country. It seems that both band 1& 2 channels are supported in the EU (for indoor use), so the X20-4G should also support them.

And yes, it should be same for the X50-4G as well.

2. The main difference between the two models (other than the ones you mentioned) is that X20-4G can get up to 1.2 Gbps speed in 5Ghz, whereas X50-4G can get up to 2.4 Gbps.

3. As far as I know, "TP-Link Mesh Technology" is the same as "Deco Mesh", since it's mentioned on the page of other Deco models as well (e.g. Deco M4, Deco M5 etc.)

So, there won't be any compatibility issues.

Just a M4 (2-pack) user who regrets buying it

  @ImtiazAli @PetrF

Add a little more information:

Normally the EU version does not support band 4 on 5ghz.

  @PetrF

Dear Ali,
Thank you for your kind response. In the mean time decided to go through the Deco X50 user manual and while checking sections that no normal user wastes time to read (CE marking information)  I have found this hidden gem:

Deco X50 V1 user manual:

OPERATING FREQUENCY /Maximum transmitted power:

2412MHz—2472MHz (20dBm)
5150MHz—5350MHz (23dBm)

This corresponds with 5GHz Band 1 and Band 2

However, the Deco X20 V4 User manual in the same section of the document show this:

OPERATING FREQUENCY /Maximum transmitted power

2412MHz—2472MHz (20dBm)

5150MHz ~ 5250MHz (Indoor use only) /23dBm
This corresponds with 5GHz Band 1 only.

The same information on 5GHz bands is provided in the Deco X20-4G user manual pg. 56  (1910013157_Deco X20-4G(EU)1.0_UG_V1.pdf (tp-link.com)):

OPERATING FREQUENCY(the maximum transmitted power)

2412MHz—2483.5MHz (20dBm)

5150MHz—5250MHz (23dBm)  -Band 1 only

WCDMA: B1/B5/B8 (24dBm+1.7/-3.7dB)

LTE: B1/B3/B5/B7/B8/B20/B38/B40/B41 (23dBm±2.7dB)

LTE: B28 (23dBm+2.7/-3.2 dB)

While the DECO X50-4G user manual pg. 56(1910013218_Deco X50-4G(EU)_UG_V1.pdf (tp-link.com)

OPERATING FREQUENCY (the maximum transmitted power)

2412MHz—2483.5MHz (20dBm)

5150MHz—5250MHz (23dBm) -Band 1

5250 MHz -5350 MHz (23dBm) -Band 2

WCDMA: B1/B5/B8 (24dBm+1.7/-3.7dB)

LTE: B1/B3/B5/B7/B8/B20/B38/B40 (23dBm±2.7dB)

LTE: B28 (23dBm+2.7/-3.2 dB)

Also for other Decos the CE Mark information at the end of the User manual/quick guide seems to be is the only place where such information is indicated.

E.g. Deco X68: Quick user guide:
5150MHz ~ 5250MHz (Indoor use only) /23dBm -Band 1
5470MHz ~ 5725MHz /30dBm -Band 3

This translates to: Band 1 + Band 3 and it seems there is no support for Band 2.

Dear TP Link, please, put such technical information into the technical datasheet where it should be in the first place.

1. In the technical datasheet it is easy to find.

2. The datasheet is for a specific model&device version, while the user manuals are sometimes for multiple models or versions.

3. In the multipage user manual it can be wrong due to the copy-paste nature of manual writing. The probability of copy-paste error in the Technical datasheet is much lower as engineers are usually involved in the datasheet preparation/review. Such error is easy to notice in a 4 page document, while it is difficult to notice in the small print at the page 77 of a 80 page document.

4. Sensitivity information would be also welcome (as it is the only place where MCS rates for individual products can be found), however I understand that there are reasons why such information is provided for the routers and not for the Deco product line.

Dear David, I understand that the devices need to meet local regulatory limitations. However, quite often the HW in principle does not support more than Band 1 and at this moment the only "easy way" to find out is to buy the product and then return it to the seller if the device does not supports more than Band 1. This is completely wrong for multiple reasons and I would hate to be such customer. Just yesterday I have seen one TP Link router (802.11ac) at my friends desk and I have checked that only Band 1 is supported. He was also surprised.
