Dropping speed on Wi-Fi
Hi all,
I have been struggling for a while now with the quality of my Wi-Fi connection. My connection tends to drop intermittently during Zoom calls and I have struggled to understand whether the issue is with my landline connection (FTTC ending in VDSL) or my Wi-Fi/powerline combo.
Tonight however whilst trying to figure out the issue I noticed that a major speed discrepancy when connecting to the TP-Link modem/router with Wi-Fi vs. Ethernet:
- Ethernet straight to the laptop gives me roughly 45Mbps down / 16Mbps and the measurement is quite stable (through Ookla)
- 2.4GHz Wi-Fi gives me roughly 15Mbps / 10Mbps with the speed oscillating quite a bit during measurement.
To avoid introducing any interference or signal attenuation I tested Wi-Fi whilst standing right in front of the router... despite that the speed measured is still a far cry from what my VDSL provides me with.
I have tested different channels to no avail. Overall my local airwaves are not that busy. See screenshot of WiFi Explorer below with my network in bold:
A ping test (as per ) also shows regular high latency spikes. See screenshot of a relatively good run (Ethernet is a lot more stable again):
Any idea what my be causing the speed drop? It is surprisingly bad given how far I am from the theoritical limits of 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
Many thanks in advance!
