Model: Archer AX11000
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.3.1 build 20220721 rel.61848(4555)

We have an AX11000 originally connected to Plusnet with a BT modem which gave consistent speed results when uploading large files of download 22mb and upload 2mb. The modem has failed and unfortunately they are not available from BT anymore. We wish to use the AX11000 as the main router because of its superior WiFi but as it does not have an inbuilt modem (did not pick this up when buying which was a  blunder) so we have a connected our free Plusnet Hub2 router to our phone connection and configured it in bridge mode and connected one of its LAN ports to the AX11000 WAN port. If we perform speed checks when doing nothing it is about 40+mb download, 7mb upload which is the best we have ever had due to distance from BT's green box. Streaming is unaffected by this configuration but uploading and downloading files, particularly large ones, is atrocious. We get stats like ping 600-800, jitter 200 or more, upload 0.2 -2mb, download 0.2-3mb during the download/upload operation. We have tried different combinations of connections between the two routers but they don't work at- this is an area we are not conversant with except that WAN uses IP addressing and a bridge does not, but as the current connection works to some degree this must be okay. We have played with QOS but that seems to make no difference. We have not tried keeping the same configuration but putting the AX11000 into bridge mode instead as it would then lose all its features and they are in fact side by side at the moment so wifi would have to be turned off on the Plusnet router.

Does anyone have experience in this area or could possibly enlighten us as to what the problem might be?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Brian

@BJohn

Hi Brian, after reading your description, I suggest checking the settings on your Plusnet Hub2, since the issue occurs after you replaced the BT modem with the Hub2. Is it too old?

If possible, try contacting Plusnet to see if they can replace it with a new modem for a simple test. If the new modem can work fine with the AX11000, then maybe it's time to change your old modem.

  @BJohn Thank-you for the reply but our Plusnet router is their current Hub 2. However, we have come up with a reasonable solution using DOS on the AX11000. We had to upgrade Gaming, Web Browsing and Speech to maximum, leave Streaming in the middle, and put Download at the bottom of the DOS drag bars. Not perfect but got rid of Pings and Jitter in the hundreds and increased both download and upload to acceptable levels.

The moral of the story - don't buy the AX11000 unless you are connected to fibre to the premises or cable.

@BJohn

I believe you are referring to QoS, but not DOS. That's a good try.yes
