I'm just posting this in case others are confused as I was.

I've just been setting up a wifi extender.   The instructions say to do things like changing the name of the extended network at http://tplinkextender.net/

When I go to that URL it's a phishing site which my antivirus program wouldn't let me go into.  Same on multiple browsers.

I raised this with TP-link tech support who didn't seem concerned about the phishing site but told me that the URL is not available once your extended network is running correctly.

"once the extender successfully setup the IP address will change so the http://tplinkextender.net/ will not  be acessible anymore."

I asked what if I want to change the name of the network for example.  He said you have to reset the extender.

"the URL will be fine if the main router is turned off so that the DHCP is disabled."

So that's the explanation.  I'm just posting it here in case anyone else tries to go to the URL and gets a shop site that tries to install malware.  I hope TP-Link can do something about it but the person I spoke to didn't seem concerned.

  Hello @nlamont

Thank you very much for the feedback and sharing. As far as I know, some fake URLs have been reported and taken down before, but it is very unlikely to eliminate all those fake domains. We'd also like to share some information that could help our users to access the web page correctly or reach support in the correct channel.

1. The correct URL for TP-Link range extender  is ' http://tplinkrepeater.net '  this web UI is accessible in the local network or when the devices are connected to the range extender's Wi-Fi/Ethernet, rather than an online website that can be accessed from the internet. Kindly refer to right instructions to access the web page of range extenders.

How to log into the Web GUI of my brand new 11N Range Extender (new logo)?

2. An FAQ Notice of Fraudulent and non-TP-Link Affiliated Websites was made for our customers and that offers some tips to avoid the fraudulent or fishing website.

If you ever suspect the website or support does not seem to be official, here is  the correct channel to contact TP-Link technical support:

 https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/contact-technical-support/

Remember that at TP-Link, we do not charge our customers for support services, the customer service is always free. Please pay attention whenever any individual or third party asks for paying for the customer service.
