I have 2 M4 units which I have set up (I believe) in AP mode.
I thought that this would extend my current network (Router is Archer VR1600v) but M4 shows up as a separate network called deco m4.
Is this what is supposed to happen?

It is what supposed to happen. Deco mesh does not extend Archer VR1600v WiFi. Deco will run its own WiFi network. It is recommended to turn off router WiFi after Deco mesh is up and running.
You can change your Deco mesh SSID in Deco app, under More/WiFi.
You can find in what mode your Deco mesh runs under More/Advanced.
