Model: Archer C5400X
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.2 Build 20191223

Hello,

Started having an issue with the Archer C5400X. I have it connected to an Archer AX6000 and it's being used in Access Point mode.

Today after upgrading my internet connection i realized that the C5400X is capped at 100Mbps instead of 1000.

Strange thing is the same CAT 6 cable that i use on the router's WAN port, when connected direcly to my desktop, delivers 1Gbps with no issues.

Tried setting it manually to 1000Mbps full duplex, but apparently it fails, as afterwards i have internet connectivity from the router.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your time.

Have you tried to connect C5400X to another AX6000 LAN port. or use a different ethernet cable (CAT 5E/6) ?

Sometimes that happens when the device doesn't negotiate the maximum bandwidth with a particular cable or ports where it is connected.

I have spent the last 2 hours trying several scenarios :

  1. Tried 4 different CAT 5E / 6 cables
  2. Connected the C5400X directly on the AX6000 (they are located on different floors)
  3. Connected the C5400X on a different LAN port on the AX6000
  4. Connected the C5400X directly on the ISP router bypassing the AX6000
  5. In every scenario i tested with all 4 cables
  6. Factory reset

Unforunately same result. The Ethernet / Wan port of the C5400X every single time ends up on 100Mbps instead of 1000.

I have had this router for almost 2 years and I'm certain during the 1st one it was connecting with 1Gbps, as i was transferring files between PCs on different floors with 80-100MB/s.

There were no changes to the network instrastructure of the house since then, so can't even imagine what could have possibly caused this.

Clearly something is wrong with the router for some reason. Anyone knows if TP-Link can provide a new firmware to fix this, otherwise I'm returning it.

Upgraded ISP connection to 1Gbps today, so 90% of my bandwith will be wasted if this can't be fixed.

Well, it seems that you've already tried everything that can be tested.

You could also upgrade the router to the latest FW version and see if that will make any difference.

This could be a faulty WAN port as well. So if the device is still under warranty just contact the retailer or your local TP-Link support to be advised further.

It's already on the latest firmware build. Will return it under warranty then. Thank you for your assistance.

It's a shame really, 6 months ago my AX11000 stopped working and know this.

Wondering now if it was purely bad luck in both cases or if i should switch to another brand.

Hello @TheFaLLeN

Do you mean you encounter the same issue with the previous Archer AX11000, and that one has been returned? Can I know how long it works?

Regarding this Archer C5400X, what if you change it to Access Point mode manually as follows, then connect one of its LAN ports to the AX6000 LAN? Will it negotiate at 1000Mbps?

How to configure the TP-Link wireless router as Access Point? (Case 2)

  @Kevin_Z

The Archer AX11000 turned off and never turned back on out of the blue.

As for your suggestion with regards to Archer C5400X, i have connected the cable coming from the AX6000 (LAN port) to one of the LAN ports of the Archer C5400X instead of the WAN port, and it syncs with 1000Mbps.

So i suppose it's just another confirmation that the Archer C5400X WAN port is failing.

If not mistaken the above setup will essentially turn the Archer C5400X into a switch with wireless connectivity rather than a purely Access point.

Good to know that manually switching to AP mode works. Regarding the two methods of configuring the AP mode, there are actually not many differences in router functionalities, it's just more commonly used on those routers that don't have the operation mode configuration.

I suggest monitoring the speed for days, and you can try to switch it back to the original AP mode to determine if the WAN port is failing or not if this really puzzles you.

Configuration wise I haven't changed anything. The router is still in access point mode. Only thing I changed was the erthenet cable, instead of the WAN port I put it in a LAN port.

The router should work the same way (as an AP) even if you moved the cable from its WAN to LAN port - you just lost 1 LAN port for the up-link connection to the AX6000.

Just make sure if the C5400X can check for the automatic FW updates and the time settings are updated automatically.

If it can't - you can always update these manually.

Eventually i purchased another AX6000 and sent back under warranty the C5400X.

Wouldn't risk keeping it and possibly have other issues out of warranty.

Thank you for your help.
