Model: Deco M9 Plus
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.56

Hi there,

My current Mesh setup consists of the following:

- main Deco M9 connected to my ISP's modem/router on the living room, set to Access Point mode;

- a TP-Link unmanaged switch, model SG105, located on a bedroom at the center of the apartment, to which I have both the main Deco and a second Deco M9 connected via cable, thus enabling Ethernet backhaul;

- one Deco M5 placed on a different bedroom, which I want to connect to the network via Wifi.

Here's a diagram of the setup:

I am able to set everything up wonderfully as long as I don't connect the second M9 to the aforementioned switch. As soon as I do that - and I need to, in order to get extra Ethernet ports -, the M5 shows as disconnected on the Deco app.

This should be a pretty simple setup, I guess, but my limited knowledge on home networking is probably causing me to make some dumb mistake.

Can you help me figure out what's wrong, please?

Is is perhaps this particular switch model that is preventing the Wifi backhaul from happening on that second satellite?

Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the community.

Due to the network limitation, I could not open the link you sent.

So is your network layout like this?

And currently, as long as the red Ethernet cable in the picture was unplugged, the satellite M5 will be disconnected on the Deco APP, right?

Would the LED light on the Deco M5 turn blinking red as well?

---if it is actually green, please stand next to the Deco M5 and check whether you are able to get any internet service from Deco M5.

Thank you.

Best regards.

  @David-TP

Thank you so much for the quick reply!

Yes, the network layout is exactly like the one you posted and the LED light on the Deco M5 does turn blinking red when disconnected from the network.

In the meantime, I ran some tests and was able to confirm, with absolute certainty, that the problem does not lie in the switch after all. It has to do with wireless coverage on that second bedroom where the M5 is located, and most likely because of this huge closet that sits at the entrance to the room. I even tried to replace the M5 with the satellite M9 (because of the M9's tri-band), but still without success.

It's just weird that the Wifi signal happened to improve, and allow the network to recognize the M5, everytime I unplugged the satellite M9 from the switch (and I did it twice, I believe), but I'll have to chalk it down to a mere coincidence.

The reality is that the M5 was able to be successfully recognized by the network, even with the switch enabled, as soon as I moved it out of that particular bedroom.

All in all, problem partially solved - I just need to move that monster of a closet out of the way ;)

Thank you for the attention!
