I am desperately trying to understand the parental control & the firewall.
I live in a house of five people, me, my wife and three children. Each of the children has a laptop and one or two mobile devices that access the internet through the modem/router.
I want to block: Facebook, twitter and ask.fm. I don't want to enter into any debate about why I want to do this as it is outside the scope of this particular thread.
I can only see four IP addresses on the parental control where I can restrict or block access to those sites.
Why can I not have more, for the reasons stated above?
So, I look to the firewall to block the sites, it seems I cannot do this with a URL so I have used the ip address. To me this not ideal as it would mean blocking facebook for my wife which she occasionally uses.
So that all set and saved, I try to get on facebook. Easy peasy, so the firewall does not work.
Could anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I have followed the instructions in the manual, so it should work.

Any help gratefully received
Jeff

Hi.
In parent control, you can make a white list of some websites that are allowed to access on your children's laptops or mobile devices. The other websites that are out of the white list will be blocked automatically.
See this FAQ: http://www.tp-link.com/en/article/?faqid=453

In firewall, you can make a black list toblock some websites based on the MAC address of your children's laptops and mobile devices.
If you are not sure about their MAC addresses, you can go to DHCP Server->Client list to check the MAC addresses.
See this FAQ: http://www.tp-link.com/en/article/?faqid=467

Hi Alisa,
This works for some sites I tried just to see if I had the settings correct, but for facebook and twitter, this does not work.
Do these sites have some sneaky way of disguising their site with a funny URL?
Really desperate to block facebook and twitter access.
Kind regards
Jeff

I'm afraid that you cannot block facebook or twitter. My friend bought a TD-W8968 before, and he also couldn't block facebook. The modem effectively blocks www.facebook.com, but children can easily get past the filter by typing https://facebook.com. After contacting with TP-Link support, they said the modem cannot block https websites at the moment.

Hi Moon,
WHAAAAAAAAAAAATT!!!!!!!!!!!!
This means the router is useless!
Why put parental control with only 4 ip addresses?
Firewall that cannot block sites is useless
thanks for the update.
Are there any TP Link engineers who can comment?

kind regards
Jeff

Hi, Jeff.
It seems that the firewall of the modem can block any websites except some websites which are begin with https. For example, it can block www.facebook.com, TP-Link website and so on, but when the websites addresses are begin with https, it can not block, such as https://facebook.com.

"Why put parental control with only 4 ip addresses?"
Only 4 IP address? You mean 4 MAC addresses, right?
Maybe TP-LINK designs the modem to only have 4 MAC addresses in Parent Control in view of the system resources of the modem.

Not sure. Maybe you can contact with TP-LINK to double check with them.
