Adapter does not identify network

I downloaded latest drivers and installed. The device is recognised in Windows 8 and in device properties shows signal strenth of 412Mbps. However the modem SSID is not shown in properties. Downloaded the latest utilities software but could not run it, error "cannot locate libraries" - likely not compatible with Win 8
In Network and Sharing Centre, adapter settings the Adapter is identified and shows 4 bars signal strength. When I check the status it shows "not connected" and no SSID is shown.
Any ideas to overcome this problem is much appreciated.
