TL-WDR3500 weak signal

Hi. I just bought a TL-WDR3500 to replace my old Linksys wrt54g. So far, Im dissapointed. The wireless signal is weaker than my old router. Ive tried every channel possible, every mode, both channel width. I updated to the latest firmware.
When measuring db with wifi analyzer tools, my old router will give me about -50db while the tp-link will barely get -70db.
The router is at the exact same place as the old one.
Is my new router defective ?
