Hi,

I am trying to understand how AP mode works vs WiFi range extender device.

Archer C7 AP mode

I have 2 Archer C7 routers at opposite sides of the house.

Router 1 - Main Router

WiFi enabled.

SSID = Main

Router 2 - DHCP switched off

WiFi enabled.

SSID = Loft

Both are connected together using an Ethernet cable. I have 2 WiFi networks in the house (Main and Loft).

If I switch router 2 to ‘access point mode’ only, does this still broadcast a seperate WiFi network or does it extend my Main WiFi network?

How is enabling access point mode only different to my existing routers setup? Do both scenarios behave in the same way?

How do WiFi range extenders with an Ethernet port typically work with WiFi routers? Do they need to be connected via an Ethernet cable? Do they normally connect to eachother over the WiFi network? What is the benefit of having them connecting together with an Ethernet cable over connecting them over WiFi?

OneMesh question

If I use an Archer C7 v5 router with OneMesh enabled with an RE450v4, Does OneMesh require both devices to be connected via an Ethernet cable? Is there any benefit with connecting them together with an Ethernet cable? Will OneMesh work better this way or does OneMesh not care if the RE450v4 is connected to the router with an Ethernet cable?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

@Makaveeti

You can use C7 in two AP scenarios.

Scenario 1 (you probably use this one).

Scenario 2

The difference - In Scenario 2 most of the router features are disabled and only those related to AP mode remain active.

(Bare in mind that in Scenario 2 you are using the WAN/blue port for uplink of the second device, not a LAN port).

Apart from that the devices behave the same and you have two separate SSIDs (I presume you are using a Smart Connect feaure).

Here are some Q&As regarding OneMesh.

OneMesh doesn't support ethernet backhaul for now - that means you are using only wireless connection between the extender and the router.

OneMesh feature is available only in router mode with few devices exceptions.

Ethernet port of an extender is used when it is configured in AP or client mode (wireless adapter).

Some extended reading about TP-Link Mesh features here.
