So far, I have been unable to pair my devices. I *do* have an internet connection (I have switched off the wireless on my pc and I am still connected), but using the utility it shows zero powerline devices detected.

So I am confused. How can the devices be providing a LAN connection if they are not paired?

Anyway, I have tried to pair them using the "pair" button - several times, and have reset, but no success.

I have also used the advice here
http://www.tp-link.com/en/article/?faqid=258

However, when I click "set local device only" I get an error message: "unable to complete the command", "the Homeplug Adapter was not connected".

Any help would be much appreciated.

connect your computer to the TL-PA211 with a lan cable, and then install the TL-PA211 utility, then I think the utility will detect the local device. If not, try another cable and copmputer...
