Model: Deco P9
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Hi,

i'd like to set up a mesh network with a backhaul

- wired where a ethernet cable is availabe

- powerline if there is no ethernet

so i was thinking about a few M4 or M5s

+ P9's for the locations without ethernet

But i am not sure everything will work:

1) the faq on powerline-deco says (Q4) that PLC + ethernet can't work at the same time.

But it is unclear if this mean both can't work at the same time between two deco devices,

or that one wired connection disables the powerline backhaul for all other decos

So, will this work?

M4 <=== ethernet ===> P9 <--- powerline ---> P9

2) the same faq states in Q1 that for powerline backhaul to work, the P9 should be the 'main' deco, not a satellite unit.

I wonder if 'main' is the same as 'router mode'

I would prefer to run the P9's in acces point mode (will save me a unit)

3) if the answer to my first question is "won't work",

would it work to use classis powerline adapters instead? with a short ethernet cable to the deco

e.g using an AV1000 device TL-PA7017P:

M4 <== ethernet ==> M4 <=>TL-PA7017P <--- powerline ---> TL-PA7017P <=> M4

<== ehternet ==> stands for 10m cable through walls,

<=> stands for local mini-cable

i did read deco-powerline and classic powerline don't play together (Q3), not sure why

but I see no reason why a setup with classic powerlien-only + ordinary deco's wouldn't work

a ethernet connection through a classic powerline device should be indistinguishable from a real ethernet connection?

in general, i wonder if there is any difference between a P9 and M4+TL-PA combo

(when matched with similar units)

Hello, thanks for asking.

As per your question 1, the PLC backhaul and the Ethernet backhaul cannot take effect at the same time between the same Deco nodes, that is to say, two P9s can either build up a PLC backhaul or an Ethernet backhaul, this cannot take effect at the same time. While PLC backhaul and Ethernet backhaul do work among different Deco nodes, such as the below layout:

Deco P9======PLC backhaul=====P9

             \-----------Ethernet backhaul--------Deco M5/M4

              \(((((())))Wi-Fi backhaul))))))((((((Deco M9/M4/P9

As per your question 2, the "main" Deco just means it is the main node, either in AP mode or router mode. It will not take effect if the Deco P9 works as the extension node.

"M4 <== ethernet ==> M4 <=>TL-PA7017P <--- powerline ---> TL-PA7017P <=> M4"

This layout will work, but the three M4 will just build up an Ethernet backhaul but no PLC backhaul, as we stated in the FAQ that the Deco device can't pair with the powerline devices and then build a PLC backhaul.

"A P9 and M4+TL-PA combo" are different, the PLC is built-in in the Deco P9, thus it can build a PLC backhaul with the other Deco P9/P7, while M4+TL-PA combo is just a Deco device + a TL-PA KIT, the Deco M4 cannot pair with the TL-PA KIT and work in the Deco mesh.

To know more about the Deco mesh, please refer to this article:

I hope this makes it clear, but let me know if you still have any inquiries, good day.

@TP-Link_Deco

Thanks for the reply.

Question1+2 are clear now, thanks!

Question 3 on classic powerline adapters less so

I am a bit confused how you talk about PLC backhaul

I assume PLC backhaul is just a slower version of ethernet backhaul

But you seem to see it as a disadvantage there is no PLC bakhaul?

So I assume this "ethernet backhaul" (paritally over powerline)

M4 <== ethernet ==> M4 <=>TL-PA7017P <--- powerline ---> TL-PA7017P <=> M4"

works just as well as PLC-backhaul

P4 <----- powerline ----> P4

                     \---------- > P4

Just as well, or even better for connections only involving the first two M4 (real ethernet wire)

-> superior solution

Correct?

You also state:

the Deco M4 cannot pair with the TL-PA KIT and work in the Deco mesh

This is a confusing statement, you also said "this layout will work" for a setup using this combination

To be clear, the TL-PA is ethernet only, no wifi, it is only used to bridge ethernet to powerline

so no idea whay you mean by "pair", the TL-PA should be transparant to the M4

(a TL-WPA powerline adapter with built-in wifi is something else, I suppose the wifi component lacks the deco mesh features, so it is viewed by decos as a plain/non-deco AP)

One last note on the FAQ:

in Q3, it's unclear what is meant by "the powerline product"

have a nice day

Hi, I just added Poweline adapters (TL-PA8010P KIT) to my Deco M4 (2 packs) today. This acts as Ethernet backhaul and I immediately doubled my wifi speed from the satellite node. I have 3-phase power supply on the DB and I was initially concerned it won't work because of the 3-phase power.
