Model: Archer VR600
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 0.2.0 0.9.1 v0074.0 Build 170504 Rel.68210n

I bought the VR600 from Currys/PC World in the UK to use to extend the reach of my WiFi and replace a TP-Link Nano router that has insufficient throughput. The VR600 looked as if it were as suitable as any other from the blurb on the box.

I have it connected to my PlusNet router by cable between LAN ports. Its IP is set to 192.168.0.98. Using a laptop connected by WiFi to the main router 192.168.0.1 I can access the VR600. The VR600 cannot 'see' the Internet. NAT  and DHCP are both off. What does it need to 'see' the Internet when connection from the primary router is working?

I have 'updated' the firmware from
0.2.0.0.9.1 v0074.6 Build 170504 Rel 68210n
to the 'latest',
0.2.0 0.9.1 v0074.0 Build 170504 Rel.68210n
which looks like a downgrade.

In my checks on your site I see that there are routers that do 'Access Point' as a selectable option. This is not obvious until you start looking for help.

Thanks,

@DavidGL

Good day.

Thank you very much for your time and patience.

Have you seen the following instruction:

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2655/

If not, please reset the VR600 and configure the access point according to the FAQ;

After setup,  if it still failed to work, please help us check the following information:

  1. What Is the model number of the front end router?
  2. What are the IP address and default gateway when the device connected to the VR600;

Thanks a lot.

I have set up the router exactly as specified, but it still claims that it is not connected to the Internet and indeed does not do so.

I have given up and swapped the two routers over. This does work so I suspect that the VR600 is doing some kind of check to determine Internet connection that is not valid.

Using the VR600 as the primary router has revealed another problem.

I run all of my machines at fixed IP addresses so that I can access them with SSH using a local hosts file rather than having to set up a local DNS server with a local DynDNS as well. When trying to add a MAC <-> IP mapping there is a problem with the GUI. I had added a few before I applied the recent firmware upgrade. Since then when clicking 'Add' in the 'Address Reservation' initially a part of, and then the entire panel is covered with a grey layer. Both the 'Save' and 'Cancel' buttons are then inoperable.

Generally the web interface is ridiculously slow. Under 'Advanced' -> 'Network', 'Lan Settings' takes around 20 seconds to display the tables.

I will follow up with other problems.

( I do understand how these things are supposed to work. I have been managing networks since before the Ethernet standard on yellow cable was ratified. After retirement I am am mainly looking after my home network, but I still do some contract work.)

David
